You ain't kidding about the weight; I used to have a Peavey Vintage amp with two SRO EV 12" 'coffee can' speakers.

The next week I asked where the sax player was. The keyboard player said, "He's in the hospital; he got a hernia from lifting your freaking amp!"
I still have both speakers (but not the amp) and one was tested by my tech a few years ago, and he said it was in perfect condition.
I'd like to put that EV 12" in a lightweight cabinet, and use it with either my AI Coda, or as an additional speaker with my AI Corus. Would it work with either of those two amps?
Does anyone have any suggestions about a LIGHTWEIGHT cabinet I could use?
This stuff does matter; I just saw a concert where every horn player sounded great, but the guitarist sounded like crap playing his 175 through a small Evans amp; even though it was mic'd through the PA.
TIA

s- ev "coffee can" speakers are the real vintage alnico magnet version of the speaker...the later ferrite mag ev speakers were probably even heavier..the alnicos are classic..you should definitely use'm
to guido 59..dont get too caught up in frequency specs..those specs are in the best possible cab configuration..those ev type speakers worked best in a thiele type front vented cab..thats how they went down so low in bass response...stuck inside your old roland combo is far different!!
if i was going the ev speaker route for jazz guitar, i'd definitely get a vented or ported cab... mesa boogie had ev loaded thiele cabs
here's a thiele style 12 cab from ported cabs....he makes nice pine cabs of all kinds
cheers

I have good luck w/ the following speakers and my Quilters Warehouse Guitar Speaker ET-90, Jensen Tornado Neo 12, JBL K120, and like the sound of the Eminence Alpha 8 in the little Quilter 1x18" closed back combo, and Celestion BN 200? in the 1x12" HD version as well!

@ neatomic and other
do you think is a bad idea put a new speaker into my old Roland '80s can obtained removing old electronic part?
Now I try to connect Quilter 101 mini head to old speaker and sound is not bad , but with an upgrade I think sound would be better.
I can male a compromise bit not expensive but good speaker such as Emimence Delta 12a ( cost 100€ - 113 $) and try .
Play with it for a time and in the future bit a better speaker with a good can.
This would be a good idea for you ?

yes, bad idea... a dedicated speaker cabinet would be your best option..as far as tone and portability..using an abandoned combo is just adding weight and a source for noise and added vibrations..and if you remove the electronics then you have a compromised tone cabinet...neither of which will give you the benefits you seek from an ev type speaker
maybe you can trade the roland combo for a decent speaker cabinet
otherwise i'd play it as is, until you can afford both cabinet and speaker together
cheers
ps- here's thommans european offerings for 1x12 cabinets..take a look..some good cabs in there

As I said before, the slight nuances are not that important to me. Besides, once I switch speakers, if they are similar, I have a hard time noticing the exact differences.

And I am happy with the substitution of the Celes BN for the EMi Delta. *Strictly* for weight. I think they both sound great.

@ neatomic
So in your opinion if I remove electronics from old combo, was my idea for the moment, the acoustic of cab would be @ not good ? I know that many people use old combo ad cabinet removing electronics
@ Woody Sound
Ok maybe the weight is also important and if Quilter have choice BN12-300s for the IT combo and cabinet they have make many test.
To reduce weight and dimensions maybe I have posdibility to have a 1x10 cab that would a little smaller and maybe also the speaker would be the same.
For 10" speaker I have 2 idea :
Celestion G10 vintage 60 W used by Quilter or WGS10C .

I have choose I will buy a Celestion BN12-300s and put it in old Roland combo can for the momento And I hope it sounds well
If not, in a second moment I will buy a good cab choosing in tranquillity with no pressure
