Having owned a stupid quantity of different guitars through the years, I would compare the Fender Telecaster to the Gibson ES-335 and the Les Paul in terms of versatility, playability, and sheer, all-around "oh, yeah."
Interestingly, over the years I have owned several of each--but only one 335. At one point, I sold them all in order to get into expensive, carved body archtops. I found that I missed the "all-round" guitar.
Which one did I re-purchase? The Telecaster. I can do without the 335 and the Les Paul...but not the Telecaster. Ultimately, it is WAY out in front of the other two, although it costs less--due to the production economies of bolt-on neck/body construction. Don't let that fool you, though. The Telecaster is a SERIOUS guitar.

I think the Strat is up there in terms of versitility. It maybe doesn't extend so much into jazz territory, but for rock, country, blues, etc., etc., it's up there.

But, honestly, you can cover almost any style with almost any guitar. Ted Nugent used to use Gibson Byrdlands (he still might). I've heard guys play jazz on shredder guitars. Is it a classic sound? No, but it works.
