One is preferable, due to the weight. But the 20 or 40 could work.

What about a Vox ? Is there a Vox equivalent ? ( May prefer the look. )

    Thanks.

To my ears the roland cube does not sound desirable. I've been using a cube 40GX which was bought by one of my schools for teaching, with an old L7 with a bartolini floater and a Yamaha Pacifica solidbody. I find the sound of both guitars dull through this amp.

same here. I bought one of the new peavey transtube amps that have modeling built in. The transtube was already a cheaply made amp but the newer version takes a couple steps backwards. This amp had multiple issues with jacks and pots becoming intermittent due to them being soldered directly to the board and coming loose from moving it around the house.

I bought one of the older Peavey transtube amps, the EFX 112 used, about eight years ago for under $200.
It's a pretty dependable amp; I kept it in the trunk of my car since mid June, and used it for over 30 gigs, and it never gave me any problems. It's never given me any problems.
That's a shame that the jacks are now soldered directly to the board; that's a recipe for trouble...

...That's what I have now-a Peavey Envoy 110.....probably 5-7 years old........I can dial in a pretty decent bass, surprisingly, but I absolutely cannot smooth out this treble......I'm trying to live with it 'til I buy the next one....

(( and in the meantime, I'm driving all the nice people here nuts with questions about what to buy )).....

    Thanks again !

I bought my Peavey transtube amp solely for musicals I get called for that need a rock-type sound.
I wouldn't recommend it as a strict jazz amp.

I really liked the old Yamaha G50 or G100 Series II 12" combos. They can be had for less than half the high end of your price range. Fixing the pots can be a bit of a bother to repair if necessary, but you said best-sounding, not easiest to fix!

I like the series 1 Yamaha G50 and G100 with the master/preset volume. You could buy 3 for the price, the controls are straightforward to repair (not that I needed to) without the parametric EQ and the tone is fantastic. I found a G100 1-15 that is great, they came with a premium speaker and blends with my twin very nicely. My G50 2-10 is the same except for the power and speaker configuration.

The more I think about this one, the more the combination of (1) sound, (2) price, and (3) easy controls tips the scales towards Polytone. There are lots of SS amps that sound great. Most second-hand SS amps that have any age on them sell in the price range specified. However, when you add the "easy controls" constraint, we have a winner. Almost every amp manufacturer besides Polytone gave in to the wonky tendencies of the young guitarist to desire an amp panel of gizmos and gadgets. More or less only Polytone said, "you need a volume control and a Baxandall bass/treble tone stack." Oh, yeah...plus the slide switch to let you shelve away gobs of additional treble. Pretty simple.

The winner--in consideration of ALL THREE requests by the OP--is Polytone...if you seek out a 70s or 80s amp. Later on, even Tommy Gumina caved and added brown-n-serve buttons and power rinse, etc.

Diamond tolex polytone = jazz tone + proven reliability.

How many of these modern SS amps will still be kicking butt 40 years later? Mood more convincing? You can rebuild a poly entirely for very little money, and it will go another 30 years. How many of these modern amps will you even be able to repair? Modelers? Forget about it...

I keep managing to pull better sounds out of it as I play with it

I haven't had a chance to play it out much as a jazz amp ... but I've played in church groups using my PRS MCarty, Gretsch Power Jet, and sometimes a Les Paul and it did a nice job for leads and rhythm.

Do you mean the model like this one? Polytone MiniBrute III This one is selling locally for $375. What size speaker would it have?

    Wildcat,

Bingo! That's the one. Dead simple, and it has a sound that produces instant "Joe Pass/Jim Hall/Herb Ellis/George Benson/John Scofield/Emily Remler/etc" when you plug in an archtop or a semi-acoustic guitar. I've played the diamond tolex, 3 knob Mini Brutes for 35+ years. I've played the fuzzy, felt-covered ones for more like 40 years. Been playing the rough Tolex, metal grill ones for 20 years. They are all tough and sound great. I just wish that the newer ones still had only three knobs...four, if you count reverb.

They are what they are--basically, you are going to sound like all of the old Pablo records, or like the 70s George Benson records. They won't sound like a Fender and they won't model anything but a Polytone Mini Brute (that is, tweak any of the knobs and it will still sound exactly like a Polytone). Still, for one kind of jazz, they sound great.

FWIW, I sort of suspect that in 25 years everyone will be saying much the same thing about Henriksen's "The Bud" ... but time will tell.

Got it Greentone. 15" speaker, correct?
I had a Polytone in the past, not this model, 12" speaker that I had re-coned, and liked it a lot, but sold for financial reasons at the time. It took me a month to get rid of smoke smell. It was the fuzzy black carpet model.
The seller is local and is firm on the price, $375. Yeah/Nay?

It looks like a clean Polytone MiniBrute III. I have two of those. They are probably my all-around favorites. You just add a reverb pedal if you like. PLUS: they are a really good amp for use with a Fender Precision or Jazz Bass, and with upright bass. Are there more contemporary bass rigs available? You betcha. Do they do the P-bass into an Ampeg bass combo deal the way that the MB III does? Nope. Both I and my son currently use these amps for bass _and_ guitar, even though we have each had everything up to SVTs for bass rigs. (Actually, I preferred using an old Fender Showman.)

If I didn't already have multiples of that amp, I would probably be asking where the store was, myself.

I've got something like one of those -- 1x12 I think. the foam front was totally crapped out so I made a wood frame covered with fabric to replace it. My bass player loves it more than I do.

The Fishman Loudbox, LBX-300 (older black model with grill 2 woofs and 2 tweets) is the best sounding solid state amp that I have ever played. It is amazing in every way. Very responsive to the player's touch. Excellent built in effects. Can take a microphone as well. Rear panel outputs for both channels as well as mix out for DI.

The LBX-300 kills the current Fishman Loudbox (the brown one) and I can only imagine that Fishman's reasons for dumbing the amp down was due to costs.

This amp kills for jazz tones, takes pedals well for lower volume blues & rock. Acoustic/Electrics are "to die for" (as the ladies say) through one of these.

Seriously....try an older LBX-300. You will find them on the market for under $400. They are that...good! One of the greatest solid-state amps ever made. Eric Johnson uses one. Nuff said.

Never saw one of those either......It's sort of discouraging just how limited our used market is...these stores don't trade too often.......

Worst case, it may make me try one of the new ones.....

    Thanks....

There are two over on Reverb.com right now. GC used typically will have a couple and they always price them under $400. There are a couple of lower level models which have less features and single speakers...(LBX-200 and LBX-100) which sell for less than $300. Ive never played those, but Id imagine them to be good.

To add to the GC comment -- you can find them used at GC online nationwide, and have it shipped to the nearest store (you'll pay the shipping) -- and if you're not happy with it you can return it within 30 days for a refund (shipping not refunded). They usually price a little high on used gear compared to private sellers, but that's a premium I'm comfortable with when you factor in the security of dealing with a company rather than an individual you don't know from Adam's housecat.

Before you pull the trigger on this sort of deal, though, call the GC which currently has the amp and make sure they 1) still have it, and 2) that they mark it immediately (as in while you're on the phone and pushing the credit card through) so that it doesn't get sold out from underneath you. That's happened to me and it's a PITA.

Here is an EJ set from last year, acoustic electric recorded with a cell phone or small camera. I dont see the amp on stage, however it is listed on his website as part of his gear.

Eric Johnson Gear and Equipment (2015)

There are a couple of terribly done reviews on this amp on Youtube by gearwire which should be avoided.

However here is one with an acoustic player. IMO could be mic'd better, however the amp is very defined which shows though the poor audio.

I play semi hollow and hollows through mine and it kills. Very responsive. A very cool feature of this amp, is you can plug a dummy 1/4" in to the headphone out and it will cut off the speaker output by design....however the XLR channel feeds from the back still work which can go to the board. I use that a lot for late night practicing sending a feed to my mixer where the headphones are plugged in or to a DI for recording noiseless.

I just bought this old nylon electric yesterday and cant wait for it to arrive to run it through the Fishman:

Good points....I order guitars from them all the time. The last guy told me that it was a 45 day return window. I bought a bass which I didnt care for the active electronics. I took it back to the local store and they gave me full return including shipping!
