I have spent my whole life chasing this tone in my head. Too many guitars and amps to number. Joe was so right when he said I paddle my boat with one oar in circles. I have always loved the simple look of a Archtop with a floater but that is just not my sound and never will be. I have been chasing my tail for decades. I found my tone years and years ago. Every guitar and amp I have I dial in to sound basically the same. Every time I play my L5 or Tal I think wow this sounds great. Basically buying all these guitars really just amounts to hoarding. My wife always says to me "why do you have all these guitars...they all sound the same". She is right. I make them all sound the same. I am basically a certified nutbag. This is a revelation to me in every sense of the word. Gibson Archtop with one 57 classic. That "IS" my sound. Marc is so right. Anymore than 2 guitars is artwork. Will I stop buying guitars and amps ? Probably not. I am a junkie with a monkey on his back most Absolutely! I am also President of Club Nutbag. BigMike is VP, Joe is Secretary of Defense , Marc is the Attorney General, And Mark is the Surgeon General. The rest of you are certainly sitting at the board of directors table. Oh BTW I have a new Henriksen 312 on the way. Ya baby!

A man's gotta have a hobby Vinny! What ever happened to the blonde CES on the way?
-
Sent it back. It had a few small issues. It was overpriced IMO. TMZ made it totally right. They are great to me.

Hey I am 10 minutes from Steve Swan if ever you need me to evaluate a axe for you.

When it comes time to sell them, they will be in better condition if you only had one. If you had 52 guitars, that would only be one week's worth of wear.
Feel free to use this excuse from a fellow Guitar Nut.

I tell everyone I'm only married to one wife. And it's a lot cheaper to cheat on my guitars than my spouse. Anyway at my age 59,and my looks cheating is certainly not in the cards,LOL!

However, I do like having a fair number of guitars around because they are beautiful objects that I can enjoy and use to make music. They are each a little different in their looks and attributes.
I'm guessing the sheikh has a similar explanation for why he has so many women in his harem.
My mantra--one woman, many guitars!

so what !?!
Good tone = mostly more practice rather than better gear IMO
shopping for guitars/amps/gear is fun. It always will be.
My problem comes in when the guitar room gets a little too full of cases and the funds are a little too low
Women are fun too
sometimes more than others . . . . LOL

High end archtops don't cost as much as women do. My wife always says if the house was on fire you would rescue those darn guitars before me. I made the big mistake once with the reply....well you I can replace. That went over like a fart in church.

Sounding the same on every guitar.... I recognize that big time! But you are not the only one: I can hardly hear a difference in the soound of Wes, Kenny and Grant on their recordings, regardless on what guitar they play!
I am even worse than you, at least you know your sound is a Gibson archtop with a '57. I manage to make my ES-333 with '57s, my Thinline Tele P90 and my ES-125 with P90 sound pretty much the same! (At least when I hear them back on recordings of live-performances.)
But I am proud to say I managed to buy my most expensive guitar (ES-333) for only $1,400, the rest was even cheaper. And with the insight of your post it's probably not worth buying more expensive instruments: I'd just end up sounding the same!

I sound the same on every guitar because I found my perfect pickup, I just swap the guitars over!
Seriously though, vintage vibe CC rider h/bucker sized was a revelation to me. Just what I was searching for. I can switch from S/S to valve with no worries.
I've also just discovered Seymour Duncan AlNiCo II Tele bridge pickups. They go 'Chrraannng' instead of 'Kaaaang'.
I love the 'Ch'.
P90's too, now there's the best all round amplified tone ever. My do it all Jazzmaster and Yamaha Rock bastard have them installed. For those rock out sessions.
As for the guitars, well, nice woods and a long scale and I'm happy.
Amplifiers, took a while to source the right ones. Currently enjoying a maxed out Micro Cube (Turbo edition) at the moment. It's fun and farts harmonically with single coils. It doesn't like h/buckers tho'.
Now my recently acquired Epi Emp Reg is a fantastic player but I am not satisfied with the amplified sound.
There will be work a-plenty on the electronics over the winter.
Yeah, I was all about the thought of the 'right' amplified guitar tone with a 'proper' guitar but it's the pickups that makes the difference.
Yes, I have too many guitars if 8 is too many. But everyone serves a purpose and is a keeper!

1. Only buy sunburst so that the wife does not notice new ones.
2. Try to buy low and sell high, and let the wife know every time you turn a profit on resale.
