BTW, speaking of saddles moving around, this is what the original bridge of my Yamaha actually looks like (after the guitar had been used by a local singer-songwriter hero for quite some years). If this an inherent issue common to all six-saddle designs, rather than specific to this Yamaha bridge, it might be wiser for me to go for a three-barrel bridge after all.

I have to give a shout out for my G&L Saddlelock bridge. It's chunky, no sharp edges and the saddle don't go anywhere. Thanks, Leo!

If you really want adjustable and 3-barrell there's the Wilkinson adjustable Tele bridge. You can also buy just the saddles for a vintage style bridge. John Suhr uses adjustable Wilkinson bridges on custom Classic T's and uses the standard intonated Wilkinson bridges on the Pro series and Vintage Antique Classic T's.

I'm sure I read somewhere about the ashtray cover that it was meant to add inductance to the bridge pickup, from what I understand the idea was for the Tele to sound kind of like a steel guitar.

I like the explanation that it was the 1950's: they didn't need an excuse to add a big hunk of chrome.

I've always liked the look of the ashtray cover. You dont see them very often though.

I guess that there is no need to add one to the Tele that I am building then

Fender made stamped-plate, 6-saddle tele bridges as an aftermarket part way back in the late 1970s/early 1980s.
    Hard to find:

I don't think these are Fender but they are cool. Maybe Mighty Mite?:

I could see the ashtray acting to shield the pickup from electric interference/hum, P basses also had metal covers over the pickup. OTOH early Strats also had a bridge cover so it could just have been cosmetic to hide the bridge and to protect the hands from bridge adjustment screws. Or both.

I actually fit one of those back in '83 on a Telecaster that I bought that originally came as a top loader. I think it might have been the first year that they changed to a top loader as the American Std. model.

Kluson harmonic saddles are the shizz

Even though six saddles would theoretically give you better intonation a guitar plays out of tune anyways.

Flip the middle saddle for wound G.

And under the chrome its brass anyways.
