I'm interested in a new guitar with P90 pickup; I like laminated and 17" full body, not thinline;
I tried an old gibson 175 with p90 and it was great and I watched some old es350 YouTube that I liked very mych; I'm wondering if the new productions could go near them in tone and playability: I mean the new Guild X175 or the D'Angelico EX39. no good video about them though...

I'm at this moment taking an old Sebring full-depth 17" jazz box, taking out the stock humbuckers, and installing P90s. I'm starting with dirt-cheap GFS p90's, but if I like it, I may up the neck pickup to a better model.
I'd thought about installing a Charlie Christian, but then I'd have to deal with the bridge pickup hole...

Different model, but I love the neck, frets & response of my modern Guild Savoy A150 that
I urge you to try a Guild before you buy. Really satisfying, for me at least.
lawson-stone,
We're gonna want to hear dat thing.

The new X-175 would get you pretty close... I think the Franz style pickups Guild use are a little different to P-90s, they're lower output, but I would think the swap to a regular P90 would be fairly easy. Those new Guilds look really nice, there's a couple in my local music store, they're tempting.

I like the P90's sound too, but recently acquired a pair of Biltoft CC's, one a drop in humbucker style, and the other a suspended CC floater for an acoustic archtop. I'm assuming you're changing the pots too? From 500k currently in the guitar to 250k?

I know that you (the OP) wrote a "new" guitar. But if second hand is OK, a post WWII Gibson ES150 would fit the requirements. Laminated, 17", P90, 25,5" scale. They can be found for reasonable prices. Being utility instrumens and by now quite old, more often than not they show wear, but they were well made and if still structurally healthy, they sound and play great. If a 24,75" scale is wanted, the ES125 is an alternative (or a pre HB 175, of course).

not a lot of choices!!! the idea of a single neck p90 archtop is OUT!!...there's some 2 & 3 pickup p90 fatbody archtop guitars...but not a great many of them either!
the guild x175 is nice..has the franz style single coil pickups..like an underwound p90...that'd probably be my pick of what's out there
but really- this is my idea of a good time!
cheers

The neck is comfortable like their other models and the workmanship and attention to detail are high quality. I can't say how they compare with other P-90 pickups. I like the sound of the neck pickup and never use the bridge pickup, like many Gibson 175 players.

cool zr..i like the d'a ex-59 but not the "halloween sunburst"! ...in natural, it'd be a winner...hadn't seen before
there's also a transparent ebony version
cheers
ps- i'd bet they are kent armstrong branded pups..but generic asian made...would prob benefit from upgrade..ie. kent armstrong handmades!Last edited by neatomic; 06-24-2016 at 04:05 PM.

Neatonic, Yes, the Halloween sunburst was too much. The EX-59 is based on one of the D'Angelico guitars made with a Code/United body that was highly flamed. The EX-59 in natural maple is also highly flamed. For some reason, that picture doesn't show the flame. Here are a couple photos that show it. It's a lighter color, though, more like in your photo. I do plan to eventually replace the Korean Kent Armstrong P-90's but for now it gives me the idea of what the qualities of a P-90 are as I hadn't played a guitar with them before.

ls- fitting a neck p-90 dogear pickup into archtop can be tough..due to the neck angle used...particulalrly on asian made guitars...epiphone actually has its own sized p90..which is shorter than a standard neck p-90..unfortunately they also wind it differently to make up for the difference
could be the neck angle on sebring is just too shallow..it's a known issue
here's pickup guru jason lollar info on it

I had someone do it for me. I'm so bad at guitar maintenance that I can barely change my own strings.

hat's my D'Angelico, although I have it listed for sale I really think I should keep it as it sounds glorious....

I copied some DA that had custom ordered Franz pickups. Similar to a P90 in sound, maybe a little more articulate. He also used these on the United body models. I like the way the sunburst came out...
