Their website says the domain name expired on 5/18/2016 and is pending renewal or deletion. I'm interested in a Tomkat but can't find anyone who has them.

John Pizzarelli was promoting them for a while, but then I saw him live and all I saw on stage was Fender.

They apparently went through bankruptcy in 2014:

My two Jazzkats are still going strong.

Same here, seen him twice, both times he used a F Twin. Maybe he uses the Kat for smaller intimate settings.

Below is an old video, but the JK link on his web site goes somewhere else.

    However, here's something I found from 2016:

John may not tour with an amp and may use what's available at the club, although perhaps you've seen him where he lives and that's a moot point.

As I asked in the TomKat thread, does anyone know if Jazzkat will still fix their amps for the price of shipping?

OP, consider a Brad Sarno Music Solutions Classic Preamp coupled to a Quilter Labs Tone Block or an Acoustic Image Clarus or a Fryette Power Station.

You could have a cabinet built for them with a driver of your choice.

SMS Classic Tube Preamp, Ultra pure vacuum tube reverb preamp l Sarno Music Solutions

    Quilter Amps

You'd have a lightweight tubed preamp stage coupled with a lightweight Class D solid-state amp stage for about the same dollars which is pretty much what a Jazzcat Tomkat is or was.

Or you could go for an Evans.

If I was replacing my JazzKat (which I love dearly), I'd do this:

    Quilter mini-head - $300

    EarCandy 8" speaker/cab - $230

Joyo American - $40 (Excellent pedal for the money) OR just a simple eq pedal.

I'd love to get SMS Classic, but I'm not spending $600 anytime soon.

However, that combination doesn't give you any reverb/delay, if you want that. BTW, what is the "Voice" control on the Joyo?

Basically effects the amount of "dirt" available, and it also effects mids.

So it takes you from cleaner, more scooped "Blackface" sounds to more midrangy, dirtier "tweed" like tones across the sweep.

True about reverb, but I never use it for my jazz gigs anyway. Their "American" is modeled after a 57 Deluxe Reverb. The voice is like a mid boost. Dialing it low keeps the pedal clean and increasing it gradually builds "crunch" I'm pleasantly surprised how nice it sounds though I only use it for rock gigs where I need to a little 'grind' to the sound. But, it would make a good clean preamp. It's not a swiss army knife, but it does the Fender sound very well, especially for $40.

I just got a note back from Djangobooks saying JazzKat ARE still in biz. So who knows what the heck is going on...

Tempted to buy a TomKat but don't don't want to be stuck with a dead doorstop...

    That's good to hear.

By the way, I played 4-hours with a big band this afternoon using my first generation JazzKat, and it performed admirably. I've done many gigs with it, including some outdoors in damp weather and have never had a problem.

FWIW, the $230 price for the EarCandy cab is for just the cabinet, no speaker. The speaker is extra, so it's going to cost more than $300, even with the cheapest standard options.

I am not an engineer, but I used to be an electronic tech and I've read what engineers have to say about speaker cabinet design. I've used cabinet parameter software. If one is using an open back cabinet then you can choose what ever speaker you've heard and liked in a similar cabinet.

Closed back ported cabinets are another story. The cabinet needs to be designed around a specific speaker or speakers with very similar characteristics. Anyone who has used cabinet design software knows that small changes in cabinet and port volume (size, depth, shape, and number of ports) effects the performance graph for a specific speaker/cabinet combo. Loading a cabinet with one of 8 different speakers suggests that one would not be optimizing speaker/cabinet performance.

From the Ear Candy site: "Mr. Watts has plenty of Bass, Mid’s and Highs and is very perceptive to changes in your amps tone stack or Eq. Don’t let the size fool you." If the cabinet is "perceptive" to the above changes what about the characteristics of 8 different speakers?

For a closed back ported cabinet I don't subscribe to the "one size fits all" marketing concept.

If an engineer wants to jump in, I'm all ears. LOL
