    Hey guys,

Looking to buy a ZT Lunchbox but I'm not sure which of the Junior or the full sized model would suit my needs.

I don't need to compete with drummers but I need to cut through with pianos, brass, wind and strings in duo/trio/quartet settings.

I've read that the Junior is really more of a practice amp but I'd appreciate if someone could help clear this up for me.

    Cheers

The junior is a fine practice amp, and would be good for duos, coffee houses, that kind of stuff.

The original Lunchbox is about as loud/small as you can get. I've played a 600 seat theater with one (the place does have good acoustics, but still!)

The Junior isn't being made anymore, but they're around.

I actually prefer the tone of the Junior. The original I need to warm up with a Fender-voiced preamp and use a little reverb in almost every environment to "open it up" a bit. Then it sounds great.

So would you say the Junior is loud enough to cut through with horns, etc.?

How many? What's the exact situation?

    Generally, I'd say no.

ZT lunchbox will serve your needs better, Joe. The only point of Junior is being able to play outdoors, as a battery amp. Otherwise, def. the Lunchbox. Thats how I look at it.

Probably wouldn't be looking to use it with anything bigger than a quartet, so probably two horns max. Maybe some occasional drums and acoustic piano but I wouldn't really need it for gigs; more workshops and jams etc.

I use my ZT for everything, any kind of gig, except outdoor/busking. It's my main amp... it meant to be a temp solution, until I figure out what 'real' amp to buy. And I'm still figuring it out after 5 years!

I think the regular Lunchbox is a safer bet.

It really is a pretty remarkable little amp. I think me and Anton are it's biggest fans around here...

Which preamp and reverb are you currently using for that purpose?

I use a Tech 21 "Blonde" and a TC Electronics Hall of Fame.

This is that setup...I think I was a little too loud, there's a bit of distortion, but I can usually stay clean with this setup up to "very loud" volumes.

    mr. beaumont,

How does that "lunchbox->blonde->hof" setup translate w solid bodies? Sounds great w the 575 but I'm mostly playing a Yamaha tele-style lately and am wanting to downsize amps in the future.

    thanks

And while we at it, Jeff: do you use your Tech 21 Blonde pedal bypassing amp simulator, when plugging in ZT? The new version of this pedal has a switch to bypass, not sure if that's what you got...

The Lunchbox + Lunchbox extension speaker will give you a more fuller tone.and plenty of volume if needed .hb

Do you guys actually like the sound of the Lunchbox? I thought it was awful. Returned it after about a week.

i have an old one, I bought it used, no switch (and no instruction manual, so I have no idea if it's doing "speaker emulation."

Joe, on its own, it's not much other than loud. Really needs a little reverb to "inbox" it, and a preamp pedal like the one I use is a night and day difference to my ear.

the Jr. Is different, sounds like a tiny little polytone, but not loud enough for anything but the smallest gigs. Great for practice, teaching, and coffeehouse things, though.

50hz, it sounds great, I'll try to find an example...

I absolutely love it! My fav. amp, I prefer it over many tube ones, and sure it's the best of solid states I played. But then again, I don't like sterile clean tones that normal jazz guitarist would prefer. With my Guild with P90 I can make it sound like vintage blues amp with breakup. It got the enhanced mids, killer tone!

The other day I was playing a gig where the house amp was Fender Twin. I had to bring a preamp pedal to make it sound somewhat to my liking.. If that amp is a holy grail jazz tone, I'm not in that camp.

Here's the junior with the preamp and HOF (set pretty "wet"). I gotta see if I have a vid with that setup and the regular lunchbox.

    mr. beaumont,

Great sample, thanks. I'll prob end up with a Jr. anyway since it has as much power as I'd need for indoor practice. Thanks for sharing.

P.S. Your playing is great, keep it up.

Different strokes I guess. I thought it was grunty, honky, small and boxy. Like a toy amp inside a cardboard box.

    What will be its use?

mostly practice, teaching, and sometimes a small gig without drums or brush only

I'm kinda worried that jr model doesn't have reverb and 55 output, well the 'ambience' on original model wasn't so impressing but ..

Probably better off with the actual Lunchbox...the Jr is really just a practice amp. Always better to have the extra power and not need it, I think.

As for the "reverb," I think throwing an effects pedal or two in front of the Lunchbox can take it from "ok" sounding to "great." I use mine with a Fender voiced preamp almost always, and depending on the room, a reverb pedal too. Really makes it sound like a much larger box.

maybe it'll be better than the original for me
it's light, smaller sized, can get it when I want.
but the vacant of external speaker output is most big thing i can't deal woth.
is there a huge difference in sound between 35 and 55 size output port?
