Thanks everyone! Yeah, the L5 reminded me of my wife and her piano playing. We started dating in high school and she did piano competitions back then and would usually take first place. But being the love struck young man, I would sit and listen to her rehearse on her upright which sounded GREAT. However, when I went to the first competition, she was on a Steinway Grand and man what an amazing difference, just HUGE!!!

The L5 had the same effect on my playing. Very interactive, organic playing experience! Lovely, lovely!!

    As it should be. Nice.

I feel the same about mine. And yet, still sad that, I had a '65 Johnny Smith, with which I had to fight with to play it.
Loved the neck, but the tone and feel just weren't there.

Always wanted an L5, and I'm so glad I got one - finally. My wife encouraged me to buy it.

    Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

I don't have an L5, but I have an Aria Pro II PE180, which is one of the nicer attempts to capture the L5ces magic. That guitar is actually sensuous to hold and play. Hard to define, so I can only imagine how the L5 would feel.

While we wait, this is my teacher's L5 that he was gracious enough to let me borrow for the day. This rig was the "game changer!"

The Tolex is original, just that this is a reissue Limited Edition with the Alnico Jensen instead of ceramic. Lovely amp!

Well, here it is, a 2006 Jim Hutchins signed L5 Wes Mo. Great instrument! It is a bit brighter than the '69 pictured earlier, not a lot, but noticeable. It had a full inspection from my Luthier and everything is hunky dory! I will swap the Fralin pup out for the original Classic 57 that came with it but it is an awesome guitar! I will finish getting it 100% the way I want it and then it will get boxed up till my birthday in August. I will do a proper NGD then with some clips but here are a couple of snaps for this thread:

Damn! That's beautiful. Are you sure you want to sub the Fralin p.u. out? I know many people who yank the Classic '57 pickups out of their guitars and put Lindy's pickups in there. The Fralin is a primo humbucking pickup.

My recommendation would be to thoroughly evaluate the guitar with the Fralin in place. If, after doing that, you think that the Classic '57 is likely to be an improvement you can always make the switch and sell the Fralin to someone like me. :-)

Woo-hoo! Ain't she purty? I love the Jim 'Hutch' Hutchins era finish as there is iced tea/dark red brown in the sunburst and not so much black. The graduation is more gradual too.

The Fralin pup is reportedly very good. Maybe play it for a bit before swapping it out? It comes with a wood saddle and T-I Swings. Great.

    That's a nice 50th B-Day gift.

Welcome to the L5CES Wes Montgomery 'club'. You're blooded; we're all brothers now.

P.S. It could be a matter of swapping magnets. It is likely to be a Fralin PAF. Talk to Lindy Fralin. He could tell you about it and what you can to customise it to your liking. I like roughcast A2 magnets, very lightly wax-potted neck pups and 5% underwound.

I'm thinking I should borrow my teacher's '69 again, I'm sure he would love that Fralin! I know I would love the '69, cause DANG it sounds good!

Acoustically the guitars are somewhat similar although the Wes has more "acoustics timbre" but as far as brightness, they are about the same. Plugged in, the Wes is brighter. Having experienced high end winds on my Les Paul, I think the 57 will get me closer to where I want to be. I'll let you know! The Fralin would sound awesome as a neck pup in my Tele though!!

Well it is "our" money and this lets her get some fun out of it too. I know it's a bit of a pain, but I will try and savor the anticipation!

Well, it is time to box this baby up. I have had a wonderful time playing it and the acoustic sound is impressive. I like playing it unplugged as much as plugged in! Nice surprise. I am going to leave the Lindy Fralin pup in. Sounds great and not worth the hassle to put the original '57 Classic in at this time.

Really looking forward to August when its mine for real! I think I will work up a new chord melody of "On Green Dolphin Street" for the big day! Time to give the Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120 a workout!

    Ken,

Maybe you should send your wife to visit her sister for a week or two or three.

    or...................................

    .........you could......

    ......... I suppose.....

    .....................by chance (or not)

......... have "something else" occupy the boxed up "so called instrument" and correct your error just before it was to be unboxed.......

    just sayin'......

Hmmm, well there are two trips she is taking out of town this summer, each a week long! Thanks for the tip! Now, how to keep my daughter quiet? She is 18, she may need a summer job!!

Actually, I think my wife likes listening to this one. I am not getting any flack about putting it away. Lets see how long I can get away with it! LOL!
