I've had a couple laminate guitars with tops like that (from what I think I am seeing there). They were cheaper guitars...but they were structurally sound and I never had any problems from them.

Mine looked like that and I reversed the pickup mounting ring of the neck pickup and it looked right. I really think a batch of otherwise perfect 175s got their neck pup mounting rings reversed. I posted the pics somewhere here a couple months back.
