    My current favorite amps:

    Wolff -- 10watts, 10" speaker, 1 el34, 1 5751. No tone controls, just volume and a boost switch.

Princeton RI -- I tried running the bass on 10, treble on 6 per Jim Campilongo, and damned if it didn't work like a charm with the Tele! I keep the back panels off to get rid of persistent rattling. I'm gonna try a Celestion g10 Vintage next.

Try a Jensen P10Q in it. Delicious speaker in a PRRI.

I'm actually already running a 30watt Jensen in it. It is good! I used to use a Red Fang 10 in it, but I got tired of the high mid sound and went back to the Jensen.

The real reason I want to try out the Celestion -- besides the fact that Jim Campilongo recommends it -- is I'd like to get a smidge more mids and just a smidge less of the really high highs. The more mids is to help the Tele poke out in the mix a bit better when clean and the fewer highs is to get less fizz with my Hoof at low volumes. If I don't like the speaker in my PRRI, I'll try it in one of my Pro Jr's instead.

Using a new Magnatone Twightler 1x12. Plenty of headroom for a rating of 22W.

You are running a Jensen C10 in it. The P10Q is Alnico and rated at 40w. Huge difference in sound. C10's are ceramic.

I have Celestion red truvox 70w 1015's (I believe they're discontinued) in my Music Man, a perfect sound fit for that amp. Actually I like Celestions for just about every purpose. When they're not pushed like in a Marshall at full power they are great speakers.

A friend was clearing out the home of a deceased relative, found one of these, and gave it to me. It had a cool overdriven tone, but zero headroom. I wound up selling it to someone who collected Univox stuff.

I'm finding my combination of a Fender Superchamp X2 Head through a 12" Cannabis Rex cab hard to beat. I play both clean jazz and fusion/blues with some overdrive, so it has to be very flexible. I only ever use channel one - all my OD, chorus (rarely), reverb and delay are outboard. I added an FX loop for these, (except OD which is before the preamp).

I've always wanted to "upgrade" to a Princeton Reverb, but could not find one at the right price in the UK. However, this week decided to take a punt on a Princeton Recording Amp on eBay. The previous owner had played it for 7 years without any trouble from the much maligned power attenuator, so felt it would be minimal risk. I have had it a couple of days now and still forming an opinion. With the bells and whistles out of the circuit, it is supposed to be just like a PRRI, without the vibrato. It sounds more brittle and a lot more shrill than my Superchamp rig. Certainly can't get the same mellow jazz tone. Of course it is a great temptation to replace the speaker with the Cannabis Rex's sibling Lil Buddy, but will give it more time to get to know the stock amp better before messing with it too much. It does have quite a hiss and the reverb hums - both of which can be moderated by turning on the attenuator to about 40% and then increasing the amp volume to taste.

Duh, right, I'm running the equivalent of a c10q, not a p10q. I'll keep it in mind!

My absolute favorite was my pre CBS Twin Reverb with JBL D120 speakers, but I sold it in 1969!!

Now, I have a Hot Rod Deluxe with the right tube substitutions and a Cannabis Rex speaker for when I need power.

But 95% of the time I like and use my Fender Mustang I - what a great little practice amp with aux in, headphone out and USB out for computer recording. Along with many models and effects that are tweakable to a really fine level.

    Adjustable sag and bias, anyone?

And the Twin model sounds just great to my ears with my ES175 or Telecaster!!

+1 on Twin Reverb with JBL D120 speakers. It was the Harley-Davidson of tube amps...ruled the road. Seriously, it was an absolutely definitive sounding amp for jazz (and just about anything else). Everybody ditched them because they were TOO HEAVY.

The smaller Fenders are all great amps. It's a matter of deciding whether you prefer 50s/tweed sound or 60s/blackface sound, ultimately. For years and years, I thought I was a 60s Fender guy--owned lots of different models. Then, I started playing the tweed amps. THERE was the Kenny Burrell/early-Wes/Grant Green sound. No turning back, now...

Unless you want to consider the Ampeg amps from the 60s, that is. Amps like the Gemini I and Gemini II (do you want a 12" or 15" speaker) are amazing jazz amps, not to overlook the other Ampeg combo amps.

Of course, if you want an Ampeg you will have to find an original in good repair, whereas if you want a Fender there are plenty of reissue and tribute amps available that have 50 good years in them.

Random navy flair and blue check Ampegs are swell amps for the jazz.

Ha! I suspect that an Ampeg VT-22 with the optional Altec package is equally caster-worthy.

+1 Hammertone. No argument from me. As you know, I am a huge Ampeg fan. I have a B-15N and almost pulled the trigger on your B-12sb (which is still one of my all-time favorite amps). An Ampeg with the Altec package would qualify, in my book, as the equivalent of an Indian Super Chief motorcycle--worthy of respect from any H-D rider.

    Greentone,

I have always used Blackface Fenders but still crave that old Burrell/early Wes/Grant Green sound. What size tweed is needed for gigs with a drummer?

My favorite tube amp for a while has been my Gries 35 with an Eminence Cannibas Rex speaker. It is like a Vibrolux Reverb without the tremelo, but with an excellent master volume. The C-Rex really warms up the sound, but it still retains that blackface sparkle. Great amp and quieter than any amp I've played.
