No it's commercial; however the creator is very responsive to community feedback. License is around $60. the demo is fully functional and will last forever with a nag screen on start up. It's worth paying for though when compared to the prices of other DAWs.

Anybody here use it? What do you use it for? Like it, love it, hate it?
Just now: hate it, because it is not working at all, a non starter literally. Additionally I had to run through the typical frustration process due to failing software products.

Bought cubase yesterday from Thomann with a Steinberg UR 12 audio interface. After an endless process of registration ("MySteinberg"--man, do I need an online account with yet another password protected access for any piece of sh**?), downloading and installation on Windows 7 my first attempt to start cubase was croaked with the message "This Steinberg product doesn't support Windows basic design or designs with high resolution. Choose another design." Great! I shouldn't use another design on my working desktop, but did it anyway. Not working nevertheless. Tried to find something in the MySteinberg support forum. Forum doesn't provide any search mechanism, though the FAQ states the opposite. Then tried to find out, if I could call somebody at Steinberg. I can, by using a 0900 rip off telephone number, which I am not willing to use. Blood pressure 200/100. Write a service call to Steinberg from MySteinberg, System doesn't accept my entrance due to a lacking eLicense number. Since my MySteinberg account data has the eLicense number empty, I am tempted to click the "i" info link near the input field for that number. An info popup pops up, informing me that I have to enter my eLicense number into the input field. Thanks for the info! Doesn't matter anyway, because FireFox hung up on that popup. No way to get out, can't even close FF, had to kill the process. All text typed in to describe my problem is gone. Blood pressure 220/100. Wrote everything again, put a question mark into the beloved eLicense number input field. After 24 hours, no answer yet...

Since I am a software developer and giving support to our software by myself, I know that supporting software isn't an easy thing at all. But this Steinberg experience--man, there is only one cure for all people involved in creating such an experience: bastinado.

With blood pressure back to normal, I googled for that problem this morning and found the probable cause of non starting cubase: my graphic card doesn't support DirectX 10. DX10 is required for cubase 8. The Thomann website doesn't specify that in the system requirements for cubase. Now I am sitting here, thinking what to do... The UR 12 is a well made box, would like to keep it. But then I would have wasted money for a software not working, and I had to spend another USD 60 for Reaper, which seems to be less demanding in its system requirements. How do I love modern life, easy and self-determined...

Sorry, that was needed to let off steam!

Yeah Cubase is a licensing labyrinth -- I installed version 6 a while back and it was epic to get it authorised. Reaper really is the most efficient user of resources in the DAW world.

Well, that's a topic that will easily lead to hysteric online quarrels. Even more than discussions about Gibson guitars, and I guess you got your own experiences in that regard... Being professionally involved in computer hardware and operating system development for decades and deeply interested in psychological distortions of my fellow men, I have some strong opinions towards overhyped Apple products. So I won't step into this trap.

Guess, I already lifted my foot for a first step;-)

ps Since I am poor, that wouldn't be an option anyway.
pps No answer from Steinberg to my service request yet...

This is something I don't miss at all about the "old days" of software products. "Oh, crap. I no longer get supoort for my $200 piece of......software, because it's 4 years old. I'll have to re-up to get that? Well, before I shell out hundreds of dollars, I'd better go online and research for hours to be sure I'm not wasting money. Maybe the folks on the jazz forum know of something..."

Reaper prompts you for auto-updates every time you restart it. Constant incremental improvement. It's got all the slip editing, automation and fx that I swore I couldn't live without when I was a Sonar user.

Not only does reaper have negligible "risk" in terms of the amount of money you're laying out (after a 60-day free trial), it mostly takes care of itself, and is nearly as robust as anything you'd spend many times more to purchase. I think that the "Open Source Plus" type model they're using is genius. Take care of your customers, and price your product to volume sales. 60 days free trial and $60 purchase price after that? No-brainer.

Print the sheet for the shortcut keys and get to it.
