Ive been using Rotosound Top Tape flats 12s for a while now and love the even volume , tone response and silky feel. I just ordered another four sets and the new ones are nothing like the old! The G string is a round wound!! You can run your finger nail down the string and feel each winding, AND hear it , squeak and all! The E A and D strings do not feel smooth at all. This is a set that for all intents and purposes is between a set of flatwound and round wound! Has anyone else noticed this? The GOOD sets I had were in a cream colored pack and the new ones are in a yellow pack.Does anyone know if they changed their design? Thanks. Bob

Did you possibly get a set Half Rounds by mistake? Check the package and see.

Well its been a week or so since I contacted "Just Strings " where I purchased them and after talkng to them ,they said they would forward my concerns to the dist. I havent heard word one from them or Rotosound themselves who I contacted first! Not for anything but, you would think someone would give a shit enough to contact me.. the customer!!!!! Ill Call Just Strings tomorrow and see whats up. I dont like TI strings as Ive had zero luck with them and Ive never liked Dadario round wounds but have never tried their flats, D Angelicos were OK but I dont know if they have 12s. Any suggestions on good quality, silky smooth, NO squeak, stable flats would be appreciated. Thanks . Bob

I like Pyramid Gold flatwounds. Probably my favorite flatwounds- round core and nickel.

Well, I called the dist. and they are sending me new sets as soon as I send the others back. Fair enough I guess. I hope the new ones are right. Bob

I've got me some La Bella flats. They're good plus you get extra 1st and 2nd strings too.

Nice pale blue silk wraps on the ends!

One of the reasons I stick with TI's, if you buy cheap strings you get cheap strings.

Which particular set did you get?

Did all of the strings in the set get the silk wrap? (including the plain strings)

I've heard complaints around here, and on other forums, about every major string brand -- TIs included. Rotos aren't actually that much cheaper. I've had a great run with Rotos and a set lasts me over 12 months.

Well, I paid over $100 for four sets of TIs, different sets to try some of them. The first set I opened had rust or corrosin on the plain strings. The second set I opened looked fine, I strung up my single pickup 175 with them and the two plain strings were so loud I had to lower the E and B screws into the bobbin and then tried to lower the pickup. They were the most unbalanced strings Ive ever tried. They came off after about an hour. The Rotosounds are less than $10 a set shipped the TIs over $25, I guess you dont always get what you pay for. Ive never had any problems with Rotosound strings , Ive used them for years. It seems the problem might be with the new packaging, they are no longer packed in the cardboard package but the same sealed packaging as the rest of round wounds so they think that might be what happened. Hiya DOM.

They are 12's. The blue wraps are only on the wound strings.

I also have a set of La Bella Roundwounds in 12's with a wound G and extra 1st & 2nd strings. These will go on my Jazz Tele when I get around to it.

The La Bellas are good. The right amount of thunk and punch on my Epi Emp Reg.

I also have a set of Picato flatwound 13's that will get used sometime.

Rotosounds are much cheaper. I used TI for more years than I care to remmeber and have never had a bad string or bad set. The whole point of the pole piece screws are to adjust for string balance that's what they are there for.

Exacty, thats why I shit canned the TIs, you cant screw any further than into the bobbins and when that didnt work lowering the pickup was next, since the strings were still overly loud after doing both, off they came. Bob

I'm in Australia. On eBay Australia (which is always cheaper than the bricks and mortar stores here) Rotos are $21.95 delivered; D'addarios Chromes are about $25; TIs are $27.95 delivered and Pyramid flats can be had for $25.73 delivered.

Over the years I've tried a set of these a few times. The sustain is brief. They feel slightly rough for flatwounds. But they are balanced and amplify well.

I put a set on my Guild X-700 recently. The strings are a little dull with rapid volume decay. Then it occurred to me that this is thunk.

The strings are not expensive at all, and they last pretty well. If I had only one guitar, I'd not use these strings. But I do like their sound.

the only flat made with monel…monel being a nickel derivative, used by gibson in the 50's for their mona-steel strings..which were used by lots of players…howard roberts used 16's!

    cheers

Yes, the Rotosounds produce a very vintage/bebop type of sound. I have used them previously, but I don't think they would be to everybody's taste. Particularly those seeking a more contemporary hi-fi type tone.

On a similar vein, I recently tried these Clifford Essex brand 14-58 flatwounds. Surprisingly, for a chrome string, they produce absolutely none of the metallic "chime/clink" which you normally expect from chromes. Again, they balance extremely well, and at the 14 gauge, there seems to be an inert quality to the string, which seems to damp down the sustain on the note, but in a good way. I'll definitely use these again. They're available in lighter gauges as well.

Oh yes, and they do silver plated Manouche type strings too.
