I don't have any intonation problems on the G . I use Glendale compensated Brass Saddles and they intonate perfectly.

Thanks Tim.

I have my nut cut very Low, most luthiers will cut it too high. I have my luthier cut the nut very low so as to eliminate the sharpness of the first few frets. All of my frets are in tune. The only reason a note will be sharp is if I fret it or pull it sharp. I also use neck vibratory smooth out the inherent intonation difficulties in the tempered guitar tunning. Good luck getting your guitar sorted out.
All the best

Back to Teles.
The intonation question and nuts.
Earvana do a slot in for F##ders.
This PGS instruction vid uses a Tele with an Earvana nut. Is it in tune? I cannot say.
Mr Lerch's low cut nut and touch will go some way to avoid the slight out of tune-ness of his guitar.
There are many ways to go about the 'In-tune-ness' of a guitar, in relation to the Tele those compensated saddles is an improvement. Pro's used to bend the long intonation screw but that's drastic seeing as their are so many after market alternatives.
The other thing to consider is how you tune up a guitar to how well it plays in tune.
There's many threads on this forum to do with that old chestnut!
The best solution that work for these old ears of mine is this....
For medium to heavy gague strings:
Set nut action at first fret to just clear for each string;
Set the truss rod for a near flat fingerboard (bearing in mind that all frets are level!);
Set the string action low, say 1.25mm first string and 1.75mm for the sixth measured at the 12th fret;
Use a tuner to set the intonation at the 12th and 19th fret, the string is low enough to do this;
Then re-tune the guitar with a quality tuner like the Petersen tuner. This tunes to within 1 cent, the snark tunes to within 5 cents!
If you haven't a tuner at hand then tune with your ears in this manner....
6th string to pitch then
6th string 5th fret harmonic to tune the open 1st string.
6th string 12th fret harmonic to tune the 4th string while fretting it at the 2nd fret.
4th string 12th fret harmonic to tune the 2nd string while fretting it at the 3rd fret.
2nd string fretted at the 8th fret to tune the 3rd string 12th fret harmonic.
3rd string fretted at the 2nd fret to tune the 5th string 12th fret harmonic.
This method makes the 3rd string everso slightly sharp but works well for 1st to 3rd position chords.
Surprisingly the old 5th 5th 5th 4th 5th fret cowboy tuning works well too.
But again don't get too hung up about perfect pitch on a guitar, it ain't ever gonna happen mate!
Good luck.

Yes, thanks, for the tips JB.
I'm not so hung up with this actually. I am used to be light handed on this string at the first fret.
Btw, it sure also depends on the fret size, and with vintage size ones and a properly cut nut i'm fine.
But still, things are much easier in this regard with a wound G.
So if on top of a good string balance i can have a slightly better intonation, it's win/win.
And since i bit the bullet and slightly (gasp) pulled the G pole piece3 with pliers and rubber (couldn't resist!), fortunately without damage, things are better regarding string balance.
But half of it is my ears getting used to it.
Kris in this forum has a earvana (or buzz feiten ?) thread.
As for my tele, i enjoy it as a design from the 50's that works well.
Except that i added a transducer pu and a stereo jack, hehehe.
Probably no need for such a nut.
Yes, i knew a little bit the D.O.T.S, thanks for the video mate !Last edited by xuoham; 04-21-2015 at 10:43 AM.
