I guess primarily because they changed the whole line of instruments, most notably including transitions from rosewood to ebony boards, from 22 to 20 frets (the PM being the only exception here), and from maple/bubinga to maple/mahogany necks.

Also, the natural maple look of the PM35 (and the AF105) was often criticized as anemic, so they introduced this yellow look.

An effort to upgrade tailpieces was apparently not among the reasons!

Hi Ollie. I like the looks of the ss300 a bunch myself. What Im wanting to find out is who makes it. The Artstar Premiere line has this " made in Japan " them which is no doubt FGN who make Ibanez in Japan. But the Artstar's & especially the ss300 looks like its out the same factory but they don't have the " made in Japan " thing happening. I saw a post somewhere that said they were. But I don't know how to find out for sure.
That is a key factor. FGN are really top notch. Nothing comming out of North Korea or China is gonna be as trustable.
And especaily for me since theres Godin in the same price range. A Godin 5 the Ave GT Uptown is made at Godin in Canada.
The quality is superb. Can you get em in the UK?
The Ibanez is dressier & has more going on & if its FGN Japan as the OEM. I'm going to choose between em. If its not I already have.
Anyone know more than I do?
    Andre.

As I've seen having owned 4 Ibanez AS103's, one in blonde spalted maple, two in honey blond burl maple and one in dark stain burled maple - when Ibanez sends the specs they want to a factory that is what they get. Whether it is FujiGenGakki or any plant in China, it's not about what country is building it, it's about THE SPECS the label asking (Ibanez in this case) is telling them to do. The Chinese are just as capable as FGN at making really very top flight instruments. Passing on something just because it's MIC, well let the smart guys grab these up before our (America) relations with China and Russia crumble and there are embargoes on goods imposed. It sure looks like it's gonna happen.

    Very interested in this guitar..
I've been searching for an Es175 style guitar (while this one has a solid top), I was hesitating between the Epi Premium, Eastman Ar372, Guild CE 100 D, here's another one...
Hoping to hear sounds from it quite soon.. nothing to this day (nor as the Epi by the way.. how come?).

This Ibanez seems to be a more serious guitar though

I have had it for 2 days.
I just can't put it down. I tried it quite intensively for two 3 hour session (I rush out of work every evening to play it since I got it, honeymoon phase, but I definitily know it will survive it :-)
It really compares to my 81' AS200, maybe a little less "jewel" feeling to it (sorry, I'm french and I can't find another word).
The pickups are fabulous, the neck is so natural to play, the finish and craftsmanship is top level.
The notes really pop out, very percussive attack while staying warm and clear.
It's an extremly dynamic instrument, the solid spruce top must have that effect on the overall playing and the nuance you can put.

I would say that it reminds me my Es125 (58) in that poppy sound, great for bebop phrasing. It seems that it also clearly has a link with the GB10.
The George Benson is in this guitar, and I'm very happy with that!

The guitar is prone to feedback, in a logical manner. You can control it by the classic way, staying away from the amp and muting the strings and leveling the volume knob while playing.

The guitar, pickups, sound EXCELLENT with a bit of overdrive, it really barks, never muddy. The overall impression I get with the SS300 is clear detailled sound, very very dynamic and warm, great to play, the size is perfect.
Well I'm very happy I made this choice.
    100% happy.
