No disrespect intended but does anyone see the irony of leaving a guitar pick on West Montgomery's grave?

I was thinking the exact same thing, but wasn't sure I should post it. Glad someone else did!

I guess it beats leaving thumbs.

That observation was posted on the HOC thread, and they're mainly rockers!

I guess you're right, but you can't really leave your thumb there.

Eh, maybe its like Kaddish stones only for musicians.
What else would a guitar player leave if not a pick?

I don't use them either but if I felt compelled to leave something on Wes Montgomery's grave, that's probably what I'd leave too.

I tried to do a pilgrimage to Lenny Breau's grave in 1994 and it turned out that Lenny was in unmarked grave because no one had ever payed for even a basic plaque.

The fact that Wes was famous for the use of octaves picked by the thumb is just purely anecdotal in this case.

As means of showing respect, actually, I don't think there's a deeper and more personal tribute to another guitar player than leaving your own pick.

    Thanks for posting.

My #1 and #2 guitarists mentioned here: Wes and Lenny. Very sad about Lenny's grave, but not surprising.

    HTH,

A couple years back now, I had a pretty in depth conversation with his son Chet about a certain project that has since been back-burnered.

Tragic story, there are quite a few details that aren't in the public narrative (that I'm in no position to repeat) but one day, will probably be told. Underappreciated mega-talent + tragedy is a pretty reliable formula for an eventual renaissance of interest.

All accounts of Wes, the man . . . indicated that he was very humble. If he's looking down . . I'm sure he'd just be appreciative and honored by the recognition.

Oh . . by the way . . he'd probably have appreciated Heritage guitars and Vince Lewis if they were around in the '60s. No way such a class guy would ever feel "disrespected". Although, I have to believe that even a classy guy like Wes would frown on childish cheap shots.

This comment has been disturbing me all morning. Jim, do you know if the exact location of his grave is known but it just doesn't have a marker, or whether even the location isn't known? If the former, I would be willing to help organize a donation campaign to put a marker on the grave, assuming there would be no objection by family, the cemetery, or others with authority over such things...

He's buried at the big Forest Lawn cemetery in Pasedena. They have the location by exact coordinate. I asked at the time what could be done and I was told there had to be consent from his family. I made a few more phone calls and then let it go. Bear in mind that this was 20 years ago. I have no idea what's happened over the intervening years.

Don't know about Vince but the guitars were around back then, just with an ugly headstock and a gibberish name on it that today nobody seems to remember in Kalamazoo.

I would have left an octave.

I would have thrown back a shot of Tequila.

But then I'm not sure if that would have left much of an Impression.
