I would love to try and play a Gibson Super 400 but since they are rare around here, is there some other brand/model that compares in size that is more widely available? Does Epiphone or Ibanez make one?

Thanks. I am just curious how it would fit me. (I am around 6 ft 2in, 250 lbs).

Heritage Super Eagle. Well, sorry after reading again you are looking for something available close by I guess to try on for size. SE's aren't in every GC for sure.
I'm not aware of any 18" archtops being massed produced, but it's a great question. I never could get comfortable with one at 5'9" and 155 lbs.
But you are about Kenny Burrell's dimensions and he sure fits 18''s!!

    18" er's don't grow on trees

You've got the Sup' 4', the Super Eagle, the Epiphone Emperor at 18.5", a Stromberg...all of which make the SE a ridiculous buy....and at 3" depth the SE is by far the most comfortable to play. Your height suggests no problem with a Sup' 4' if that's your thing.

There's a Sup' 4' seller near New Orleans...he's had the wine red Sup' 4' on feebay...he's had it listed on craigs too, but still no takers at $6k...okay, now U know what I know.

I can sell you my McCurdy Moderna 18", but it isn't cheap.

    AlsoRan: A couple of things for you to consider as you wonder how an 18" guitar will fit you;

Do you play seated or standing up? If you play seated, at 6'2" I don't know that there are any 18" arch tops that you couldn't adapt to. If you play standing, you might even be 6'9" and still find an 18" arch top uncomfortable depending upon your posture when standing, how long you'll be standing and playing without a rest . . . and how you strap the guitar.

Do you have any physical limitations which might add to the challenges of an 18" arch top? Case in point, Jim Soloway had a beautiful 16" arch top custom made for himself. Now, due to back pain when bending over the guitar . . he finds it physically painful to play it.

How long, at any given time will you be playing the guitar? If you're going to spend two hours at a time with no rest, any 18" guitar will present some discomfort when played in any position.

As I see it . . there are some trade offs in playing an 18" archie. You'll be trading off the absolute comfort of playing a much smaller and more manageable arch top . . . for the wonderful, deep huge voice it will sing out with.

Closer to Texas, I think you'd rather want to check this out : http://sjrockshop.com/wp-content/upl...09/LG-GR11.jpg

You must agree, if Kenny Burrell were Mexican...http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ticBassGtr.jpg

    Thanks, everyone.

@SierraTango - You and 2b have confirmed my suspicions that guitars this size are relatively rare.

@2B - You are the one that started me lusting after the Super 400 after following one of your sales and looking at the pictures. I took note of your list and I'll look for the models you suggested at our Arlington Guitar Show in October .

@Patrick2 - In an older thread, you gave me some good advice and impressions on using this beast. Now, a year or so later, I am curious to try one. Hopefully, one of the dealers at the Guitar show will have one and will let me give a quick spin.

    Isn't there a current D'Angelico that's 18"?

Seek out the Heritage booth. I'm pretty sure they'll be there and have a Super Eagle available to sample. I would also imagine there would be other 18" archies there as well.

    Ar,

Rockin Robin in Houston had one, may still be there. Priced at alot. If that is what you are set on look up their website and check their guitar inventory.

I'm 5'10 and use a Super 400 four or five nights a week. Much more comfortable standing up, but I can handle it on a stool just fine. It's maybe more about having long arms and a slim waist. It took a few days to get settled in, so don't make up your mind based on just one try-out. Like hugging a curvy woman.

Aw, Hammertone...I have been eyeballing that Moll 18 for days. Looks like quite the jazz guitar. I was hoping nobody would see it.

AlsoRan...where in Texas are you? I'm 80 miles across the border in SW Louisiana. I have a Super Eagle (not for sale) that you could play to see if it is something you are interested in. Surprisingly cheap to buy as well especially used.

Thank you for your generous offer, peterbright.

I am in Grand Prairie, Texas, right on the border to Arlington where they have the guitar show in October. Were I closer to you, and more ready to buy one, I would take you up on the offer. For now, I am pretty much dreaming (as my wife tells me...).

But I have a way of getting lucky sometimes so whenever I see an L5 (and now a Super 4), I will look it over and take notes.

At the risk of offending one of our esteemed forum members, I am going to add that Heritage Super Eagle to the list.

    Thanks again.

I play primarily 17" guitars, but I do own a Super 400 and it fits me fine. I have much more trouble with a dreadnought sized flattop due to its increased rim depth and less pronounced waist. The S400 at 3.5" depth seems to work.

I'm only 5' 7" so at 6' 2" you should find it easy to handle!

Larry Coryell is a small guy, yet he used Super 400s to great effect during the 1960s.

John Pizzarelli plays them. They sound good in his hands.

Mike Fuller at Fuller's Vintage Guitar would probably bring a new one up to the Arlington Guitar show if you're serious about a purchase.

There will likely be used ones from small dealers too, with varying quality of course.

I can't remember if The Music Zoo shows up there or not, as I've only been once. There is at least one other big dealer that shows up there.
