Getting rarer than hen's teeth. Sellers on ebay are asking $3699 to $3999 for one now. I saw an old listing on ebay for an L-5 Studio Sunburst that was sold for $2300.

Not trying to push it too hard but considering your self-imposed budgetary constraint of $2500 and under if you are looking for a warm mellow spruce topped Gibson archtop with twin inset humbuckers and you don't mind a shorter scale length, there is a 1990 L4CES for sale in Spokane Washington. The seller has it listed up on Reverb.com for $2599 https://reverb.com/item/154858-gibso...ntage-sunburst . But I have been told that he can be persuaded to go lower on a person to person deal.

I like the L4CES for its 16" size, construction and tone. So much so that i have two of them and am looking for a third, used, in an all-Ebony Mahogany with twin pups or Natural Laminated Maple with one neck pickup finish.

Also, an L-5CES Wes Montgomery with the single neck pup must needs be different sounding to a twin pup L-5CES. It goes for the Heritage Golden Eagle with the single neck pup too. The L-5CES Wes Montgomery is a little more exuberant and lighter toned than the warmer twin pup L-5CES, all things else remaining equal.

"Solid Spruce Top" refers to the "pressed dual layer/laminated solid" spruce top that is characteristic of these instruments.

This is going to sound cheeky but which Classic Wes do you mean? Early Wes...Riverside stuff...features Wes playing Kenny Burrell's ES 175. Sure sounds like Wes though.

According to Kenny, the guitar he loaned Wes was an L-7, which would sound pretty much like an L-5.

On at least one Pacific record with his brothers and Harold Land, Wes used an ES125 (maybe belonging to Barney Kessel who has told that he loaned Wes a guitar for a recording session in L.A. ). Wes is said to have owned a 175 himself at one point. It seems he used one - his own or borrowed - on The Incredible Jazz Guitar.

Yeah Greg . . well you know damned well you stumbled across the kind of a deal unlikely to pop up more frequently than once every turn of the century . . . even for a guitar with the issues that one had. I still can't believe you sold that guitar. Even if you just hung it on your wall next to the picture of Trane, as another jazz icon. At $2,500 it would have been worth keeping, even as just iconic jazz guitar wall art. I find all L5CES' to be "pretty". But that one is one of the "prettier" . . . among the "pretty". Gorgeous shading!!

But, on the other hand, you generously allowed the guitar to pass into the hands of a player, who might have really wanted/needed an L5CES, but couldn't afford the $6,000 or so to buy one that had no issues. Good on you, man!

FWIW the L5 Wes and the CES do sound different to me. I think it has to do with the cutout for the bridge pickup and with the pickup's mass. Now, Wes's L5 was an acoustic guitar-- different top carve entirely--with a pu added. To me, the CES is a brighter, crisper guitar--on the neck pu than is the Wes. For most jazz, however, I find the CES to be the canonical guitar in terms of tone. It is the one I would buy. Just for Wes music...I would want an acoustic L5 with a PAF. Actually, I would probably prefer a Super 400 CES. GREAT tone. I practically big though.

That's pretty cool, JazzJJ. I got myself a scratched up old L5 tailpiece with the medallion and L5 script on it just for this conversion. Since you have already had it done, do the screw-mount and endpin holes line up perfectly? I got mine, a Natural, from Japan. The Sunburst is a lot rarer.

Those Sealfast Bullseyes are an indulgence! I don't think I will go to that extent.

    Very nice.
