Yes, I´m contacting the store. But I think it will happen again if I use the same monkey metal. I think I will try to find a guy who can make a good metal piece with CNC, like the user mmGhost in this topic

Man I'm sorry to hear this! IT looks bad, but the design is not the smartest. If you have guarantee try to get the replacement, because as far as I know, they provide a different tailpiece than the original. In my opinion a metal TP sounds much better to me than the original woodn' one. My AFJ 81 is much louder now than it was with the original TP.
The metal itself is not the problem, but the frame joint is the source of this defect. the thin small sides have to resist the tension of the strings while the the big frame in the middle is just pulled horizontally. It should be the other way around, which is mostly the case with the other artcores., or they use the tradional es 330 TP's.

I contacted the store, and they contacted Ibanez, so I´m waiting for the answer. I search for lots os tailpieces, but none of them had 5 holes, only 3 (the original one costs 100 euros, and I don´t pretend to buy) I do not want to have holes in my guitar or to adapt another tailpiece, because I like the visual of the original one. One luthier told me that he can make a stainless steel bracket, but it cost 65 euros, and I think it does not worth for this guitar, that costs 500 euros.

hans halmackenreuter how do you know that Ibanez provide a different tailpiece as replacement ? If it´s true, it will be great!
-
To the moment, I do not noticed any drop of tuning or something else with the guitar, but I think it will drop out sometime. I´m still playing with the guitar with this bridge condition.
-
Hopefully it will not damage the guitar top or something (one) else when it will snap with that tension still on...
Since you see it coming maybe lower the tension or change to a lower gauge until fixed
-
Thanks for the advice
-
Also, this guitar has a problem with their tuners. I think they are made from crappy metal. Because often the first string break near the tuning peg! It happend with the third too.....both strings were new.....4 years ago I had another ibanez af, and the same problem happend. I think I will have to polish the tuning peg holes with my dremel, because these crap metal does not support the 013 gauge

post no. 15 and the following post we had dicussed the replacement change - you get the information.

For me, it was a litlle bit easier, since I bought it used for 300 €. I switched the PU and the fact, that there are two little holes (from the old TP) left doesn't bother me at all, since you hardly see them.

I am always "Grovering" all my cheap Epiphones if they are not already when I buy them.
Ok I am not a reference when it comes to keep a guitar stock, but tuners are very easy to swap and they are not expensive. If you like the guitar itself, you bonded with the neck and all, it can be worth to fix what is annoying you.

My AFJ81 is also about 6 months old, but it hasn't gone the same way yet. It's clearly a design fault - the internal right angle is asking for trouble - so I am expecting the same thing to happen to my. It must be time to upgrade !
-
My guitar came from factory with 011 flatwound gauge, and I´m using 013 since I bought it. Maybe if you use 011 you will not have this problem

I think I will replace the afj91 tailpiece for the afj95 one. The part number is SMS601 or VT06, I think it is produced by Wilkinson or it´s manufacture. In ebay there is a seller who have this for around 15 euros.

I spoke too soon ! I have discovered a hairline crack in mine - a perfect stress crack - its almost invisible at the moment but will continue to open up until it is as bad as the photos above. I will try to photograph it tomorrow.

As they have just started stocking Eastmans, I'm inclined to shell out the extra dosh for one of the blonde AR371s they have in stock

This is really bad news. Sorry to hear his bad development
-
Here's how the crack starts.
As potential successors, I played a Peerless Martin Taylor Virtuoso, and Eastman AR371 (Blonde), AR403 and AR503 today, at Mairants in London (a good range of archtops in stock). They were all great, but I seem to be pretty insensitive to their differences and I'm struggling to feel that they are each worth more than £500 more (to me) than the Ibanez - which I really enjoy playing. All being strung with lightish roundwounds didn't help. I didn't walk away thinking "I've just got to have that Peerless/Eastman/whatever", but if I I were forced to choose one at gunpoint, it probably would have been the Eastman AR503.
Perhaps I will look for a replacement tailpiece for the Ibanez after all; it should be cheaper than a complete guitar upgrade.

My replacement TP turned out to be an improvement so there could be some potential for yours aswell.
-
newsense Could you fix the problem?

Yes, you can see the results here: https://www.jazzguitar.be/forum/guita...tml#post450869

I can't stand Archtops strung with dental floss...I hate the way many of these are setup from factory or even in store...doesn't help to get the real potential before buying!

I´m afraid that if I replace with the original tailpiece, this will happen again......ant to install the metal tailpiece, I have to fill the holes in the guitar, and drill another 3.......

I use a traditional Gibson Trapeze (like on 175) but chinese made I got from Ebay for 20$, that on both my Epi Archtops and I strung my Guitars with no less than 13(14)-56 and now 15-56 on the Regent.
If a tailpiece can't support more than 11 or barely 12 it is clearly a design or component weakness.
So far I have not seen any sign of stress on both my TPs and they are on since february...still keep an eye on them though
