Just got a guitar today. Shipped in its rectangular case (just 2 latches) and no box. Latches weren't even taped. UNBELIEVABLE but the guitar is ok. lol

horrible thats the stuff of nightmares

Yes, me too! The shipping labels were taped right onto the case. I was amazed that UPS had taken it that way. Like yours, mine was undamaged.
-
Maybe postal workers are (intentionally or unintentionally) more careful in handling an obvious instrument case vs. a large, nondescript box or crate?
-
Got a guitar case (with guitar inside) wrapped in what looked like butcher paper once. I panicked- but all was well.

Private party purchase?

maybe so but I've experienced SGDS (sudden guitar death syndrome) many times and this , even when the thing was packed properly. I got a gb10 once where the bridge pickup had crushed through the top. Not sure what would cause this? Maybe a drop from a very high height or most likely, the UPS truck ran over it...

Sure Jack, I was just joking. The seller should have properly sealed it, it's easy to damage a guitar (and delivery companies are not very sensitive to musical instruments too).
-
plus, who knows how many people opened it and played it during it's trip? The strings are very rusty. It's amazing it survived!

Well that's what really matters in the end
Enjoy the new guitar!

I did get a classical guitar shipped in about 0.5mm of cardboard box and that's it, nothing else.
When it arrived I didn't have to open it to see what the guitar looked like as a window about 1.5x2 feet had opened in the box! I think a UPS fairy(probably the delivery guy) had taken pity on me as it had no damage whatsoever!
-
Lol I just had this arrive today, in nothing more than a bin liner (Urrrm Garbage Bag?).
It had a sniff of bubble wrap inside and the case inside, offers no protection to the guitar. In fact the opposite. The case is made of ply and has no cushioning. How they shipped the guitars new in 73 from Japan is beyond me.
The headstock on these always snaps off at the scroll.
Luckily, this one arrived safe and sound but jeez, talk about beating heart on unwrapping lol
-
Wow, I remember that model....the gaudiest, most tasteless, and therefore the coolest Ibanez ever! Talk about a "lawsuit" headstock....!

They pretty much stole every gibson idea and rolled them into one.

Me! :-)))
It's actually a pretty rare one. Pre serial number 1973 one lady owner (ok male).

What was the sellers ID so we could avoid at all cost? That stinks.

I got an acoustic Alvarez from a Pawn shop in the Mid-West in it's hard case covered in shrink wrap. It actually survived!
-
Man, that's lucky. We all need to pack really well to the point it can survive if dropped or something else falls on it. I just shipped one out in a soft case and packed the heck out of it to make sure it was safe. Even if it costs more to ship than expected, why risk damage and going through all that claims garbage.
-
never had a guitar shipped w/no box, I always try my best to make sure it gets properly packed/shipped by spelling it all out ahead of time.
many folks have no clue and need to be educated. if you don't want to take the time you can copy paste instructions from archtop's website.

I thought it was urban legend. Now I know that it's true.
The flip side of it is a shipper thinking naively that bales of bubble-wrap protect. I found out that dropped from a great height, bubble-wrap compresses to nearly nothing under the weight of the guitar and case. Actually, it compounded my claim problem because the agent disbelieved me due to the copious amount of bubble-wrap used. Thankfully, I shot a picture which showed the shipping carton completely stoved-in.
Ibanez packs its $500 guitars better than some $10 000 guitar maker, with two internal endcaps to strengthen the box and protect the guitar case from impact image. I saw how Phil of Australia received his Collings from the US and that was not the way Collings should pack a guitar, relying on foam peanuts and bubble-wrap. Thrown from a height, they are useless. Phil's Collings survived that one but the next fella may not be so lucky.
Rant over.
