Nice!
Here's one of Chicago's best players trying one out:
Or the Forum's very own Matt Warnock on his Koentopp tele:
-
Dang! I knew that Julian Lage was great, and I've been learning from Mat Warnock for some time, but I'd never heard of John Moulder. What a terrific player! He's got the touch for chord melody and shreds when needed. Impressed.
-
Holy Jeebus, god damn it that Moulder is good. Wonder what his "day job" is?
:wink
-
John's a great player and a really cool guy...I'm trying to get out schedules to match up for a lesson or two this summer.
He's also a Catholic priest and organizes a for charity jazz fest every year. One of the goodun's.
-
Dan Koentopp has to be a really good luthier.
Plus, all the players in these videos are amazing!
-
He would certainly entice me into going to church!

So on a tangential note Father Moulder is hosting the Chi Town Jazz Fest right now. All performers are donating their time as all proceeds go to hunger relief http://www.chicagomusic.org/preview-.../#.Uxo1s6q9LCR

Did Dan Koentopp move to LA permanently, or is he running his business in Chicago and LA simultaneously (his blog states the new workshop is in LA) ?
-
I love the look of his guitars, but I'm not stunned by the sounds I'm hearing. I dare say you have to be there...
-
Yep -- South Bay area.

With an interest in his guitars I inquired in the middle of last year and he was taking deposits and build orders for 2016. While still relatively young he is obviously doing well. I have played his tele-style and it is a beautiful (albeit not inexpensive) guitar.
-
you still get a sense of what they're like - especially with two clips of that quality.
and to my ear they sound much too much like very very responsive flattops (and that's kind of how both lage and moulder are playing them)
not really very jazzy guitars (too nice)

THE KOENTOPP SESSIONS VOL 1

Nice thread from bygone days.
I love the look of archtops with violin finishes and design features.
The Amati reminds me of the Scharpach guitars ... but dang, the Scharpachs are expensive.
Any idea what these guitars run or what kind of wait there is?
-
Very expensive I believe 20K plus no idea how long the wait is.
