Personally, I like this overdrive sound, but maybe he's just a good player.

While I love many OD tones from a great many players this particular tone on this John McLaughlin album is one that stands out to me. A scalloped finger Byrdland into a Mesa Boogie Mk2?

Similar to the Bearfoot pedal in the first post is the Honey Bee Overdrive. Great low gain, somewhat dark overdrive.

And yes, this guy is a great player who does great demos.

Wow! Either I'm alone in my tone taste, or in good company w/ John McGlaughlin,LOL! I will say that his more recent live tone sans amplifier, are very harsh!

Always enjoy Chris Cain, an ES-335 and an old Musicman turned way up...

    Here's a good one:

    a classic

And while this can't compare to any of the above, it's representative of the OD tone I've been getting of late using an Fulltone OCD
    pedal

This is a tough crowd to please apparently,LOL! I will say what I like about John McLaughlin's tone is that it sounds like the guitar is on the verge of exploding and somehow he manages to keep it under control. Much like a Rodeo Bull rider. Many of the well known od/dist tones while they may be polished sound to polite. I like when a player fights to get his tone, especially overdriven. Probably the best at that is Jeff Beck
    Okay Flame Away!!

Robben: that tone is weird. Sounds like a mix of close and ambient micing...I prefer his live tone much more. RF has the greatest OD tone ever imo. Dynamic, vocal, instantly recognizable.

McLaughlin's tone there just sucks. Nothing more to be said. Awful

Neil Young: horrible ragged noise. But great songwriter.
    Now that's a contributution.

+1 for Drew Zingg's sound. Clear, crisp, expressive, bright enough without getting shrill. Love it.

Kevin Eubanks from Dave Holland's "Extensions." This tune is a great example:

[Listen to the whole tune, but if you need to forward it, the guitar solo starts at 6:00]

Drew Zingg, Robben Ford, and Larry Carlton all have great overdrive sounds. Drew Zingg is a great talent and his CD is excellent.

As much as I admire the above guitarists and their respective tone, this is what I mean about Polite Tone! I have come to appreciate guitarists that play beyond their own comfort zone and tone as well! I like when they go for it along w/ the rest of the band. All of the above guys are more than capable of that as well, but I rarely get to see/hear that from them.

I'm not a big fan of overdriven tone in jazz.
But when I hear Ben Monder, I say : again !

He's one of my favorite comper, too.

just a perfect overdriven tone with this 'french' saxophonist.
And his tone is more and more wild during the tune.

And, I share this link because there are a 'french' bassist with an upright bass autographed by Ray Brown.
