It's Burled Mahogany. Same kind of wood that my '72 ES175's neck is made from, less the burl. I didn't notice it quite as much until you pointed it out. Lem the Luthier told me that it (the overlay) increases the strength of the headstock. I just weighed the guitar at 5.2 lbs. It feels really light to handle.

Excel #1069 is one of the best guitars in history IMO. I have played it every day since I got it in September 2011. If yours is anywhere near mine, which I expect it is, you're a lucky guy. Enjoy.
