Yes, the guitar is amplified in a unique way, I believe most of the sound that's being heard is from the high frequency pickup, which has characteristic frequencies and a peak resonance value, the criteria for designing a HI Fi type preamp and tone control is very different.

Interestingly, the standard guitar high impedance pickups were designed because they're needed for Tube amps.
