I have recently been trying to understand the influence of the bridge on archtop guitar by making or adapting different bridges and saddles for the same guitar.
Here are a few things I noticed :
- Tune o matic bridges brings more sustain in a way that the string itself vibrate longer, but it's weight doesn't allow the bridge and consequently the soundboard to vibrate efficiently. It might be good if amplified, but drastically reduces the accoustic volume.
- 2 foot bridges are very efficient in transmitting the string vibration to the sound board, but in my experience, in the order to get a good sustain, it requires to refine the treble side of the saddle as much as possible, which also reduces the bass, and creates of sympathetic resonance (a type of sustain to me, but not always desire in a jazz context).
- a full contact base, because of its weight and of a larger contact area, created a beautiful rich tone, with a lot of overtone and deep bass.
It however reduced the efficiency of the system : string reaction to the attack was slower, I had to use an harder pick, and the guitar was a lot harder to play. It was a lot harder to make hammer on, pull off and legato, and had poor sustain in the treble, but offered great capacity to modulate each note...
Has anyone experienced something similar?
