I believe mine came with D'Aaddario 12s. I'm wondering if stepping up to Thomastik-Infeld JS112 woud really make a difference.

    What have you tried?

    Thanks

    Thomastik-Infeld Electric Guitar Steel/Nickel Flat Wound Medium Light, .012 - .050, JS112

Great flatwound strings-more mellow and easy to play.
Now I use 13' but also played 12' before.

Herb Ellis in his latter years played JS112 .12-50... I think endorsed them....

Thanks Kris. The 12s will be my limit until I get my old fingers back in shape.

Did the T.I.s make much of a difference in tone over the D'Aaddarios?

With 12 TI s you will feel comfortable-sound will be warm and "dark clean"...:-)

I don't have a Monarch, but I recently A/Bed Chrome 12s and the TIS 12s. Both are nice, noticeably lower tension on the TIs. The TIs are very similar in overall guage to the Chrome 11s.

Post your impressions if you make the switch.

Could that much lower tension kill my acoustic sound with my pressed solid top?

I think the Monarch ships with D'Addario half rounds. It's possible that they have changed. I've got LaBellas Roller wound on a Monarch. They sound great! I really favor a nickle string on most any archtop. Haven't had flats on it.Let us know how you like it, if you decide to go with the Thomastik's. They are a great string hard to beat if flats are your thing....

Thanks skiboyny. I have so much to learn. I really am going to try to stay away from all the tinkering. Problem is I love to tinker. I need to get some strings that are easier on my fingers until I get going. I think I will get the TI jazz swing in 12. The heck with the acoustic sound. My Polytone MBIII will take up the slack.

Just to add that I use 12 s on my archtop . I find the tapewound just a bit like putting a blanket over the amp although nice mellower tone. I use Elixir 12 s roundwound at the moment complete with string squeak but have just bought D'Addario12 s half rounds to see if I get the best of both worlds (hopefully) or end up with the worst of both (more likely?)

    - strings have a double wrap of Round Nickel over a round core.

    Strings feel and sound great

I really like the Newtones! Very low tension great sound. Thought the double wrap would kill the finger squeak no dice though. They do market them that way, they just don't deliver. If they did, they would be the perfect string!

I use a little fast fret on the strings before playing & that tends to eliminate the problem

After doing my OCD style investigating . I see that the TI JS13s have about the same tension as the D'addario Chrome 12s so I ordered a set of 13s. Seemed like the Tis had about the same tension as one step lighter D'addarios in all the gauges.

That is on the charts anyway. We will see .

Thanks for all your help guys.

I moved up from .011s to .014s over about 2 years - they just feel right now & not at all heavy or clunky! - Used TI 1s & Chrome 13s as part of that journey - both nice sets of strings (plus I keep my hands to myself!)

    Hi guys,

Believe it or not I finally received my TI Jazz strings (13s) yesterday. That's another story.

I just put them on. I am very pleased. The low tension makes them even more comfortable than the original D'Addario Flat wound 12s. The tone of my Monarch is even more smooth and mellow. More of an already great thing.

    Thanks again for your help.

I figure I'll post some clips in another 3 or 4 years
