friend lends me fender acoustasonic junior (pre DSP) - woa! my little tanglewood hollow body jazz style guitar suddenly blossoms (even my wife says "mmm that sounds lovely"!) these amps were made in the seventies I believe. this particular fellow is 40 watts twin channel with mic input. hey it's very heavy! (because it has two 8" speakers?)and has no gizmos reverb and chorus buttons. but what a lovely sound. now my question is buying another of these is unlikely (and even more so in the uk?) are the new versions, which are more 'powerful' and have more 'effects' and are not as heavy - are they going to sound as good? i'm beginning to think that the intrinsic weight of the amp is helping the bassey full rich sound or is that just the twin speakers. I used to have a marshall As50r 50 watt same style but i'm sure it didn't sound this good.....any suggestions or other possibilities I might try (must say 2 or 300 pounds is the price limit)

i have a jc77 from that era (2x10 jc120, basically) and i just love it with acoustic and archtops, floaters especially . i can take it or leave it with (solid and semi hollow) electrics, though.

I have a Vox AGA70, very compact, one 6" speaker, but has a tube in the preamp (!) which may contribute to its warmth and clarity. It sounds good with acoustic and jazz guitar, but not at huge volumes. Worth checking out. I find the acoustic sound especially more natural and pleasing than any of the other brand leaders I've tried.

I have a Phil Jones AG-100, a small acoustic guitar amp and it sounds fantastic. (100W, 2x5" speakers.) No gizmos, no effects -- you don't want that:

Since you are in Europe, you should check out AER amps.

many thanks guys - I am specifically looking for amp that also has mic input on one channel. obviously the jones does not, but looks lovely...the vox does but what does " not at huge volumes" mean, bananafist? thanks again

Check the Loudbox Mini... I had the Performer and loved it.
-
The Ibanez Troubadour 80w is a nice amp - SS, pretty light, nice chorus and reverb.

Well, the VoxAGA70 is rated at 70watts RMS and the AGA150 at 150watts. I mainly use my AGA70 to boost my acoustic volume level to play with doghouse bass and miked acoustic to 50-100 'listening' people, and its fine. I don't think it would compete as well in a noisy pub. We had a mandolin player in a country band I was in, who borrowed it, and whilst it just kept up with a drummer and guitar and bass with 50 watt Fender amps, it was easy to push into overload. It wasn't damaged though. It has reverb, chorus (if you want it,) very good EQ, takes a mic and does a great job for the money.
Discounted online, mine cost £225. I like the sound better than AERs and Shire Kings I've tried, and much better than the Marshall AS50R I tried on gigs. Hope this helps. There is a review on-line in Acoustic magazine which is worth reading.
Do try one if you get the chance.

I have a Phil Jones AAD Cub 100 (fantastic) and a preamp Ultrasound DIMAX with two inputs (two guitars, one guitar and one microphone, phase control, for midrange, treble and bass, all available for each channel), I no longer no problem .... and my sounds are always beautiful.

Check out the Fender Acoustasonic 150. Is that the newer one you are referring to? It still has 2 8"s.

Hmmm I thought I already replied to this. Let me try again: the Phil Jones AG-150 has two channels and a mic input.

thanks big daddy - yr right but I don't think the '100' has a mic in. thanks for the loudbox, genz-benz and troubadour tips gentlemen.must admit I've never thought about a pre-amp osvi. good idea. i'll check out the acoustic review too thanks banana.

The ultrasound DI Max (and DI plus single channel) is a high end preamp, absolutely transparent and quiet, a formidable and valuable sound machine. For me it is now irreplaceable. Qualitatively the same (I think better) of Baggs para DI ......

If you want a mic input there's the Schertler SR Jam 150. Alternatively you could get a Jam 150 extension speaker and drive it with a small mixer or a DTAR Solstice. You could also use a Headway EDB-2 though that has some limitations. Then there is the Schertler Yellow Blender that looks very nice though it is expensive. I'm currently checking input impedance as the device may be made for their STAT system making the input impedance fairly low. There is also the new Acoustic Image Flex which has a lot of features but is also expensive. If you need more than 150 watts, you could use a QSC K8, K10, or K12 or other powered PA speaker with one of these boxes. You could also go with a Schertler Jam 400. I think the Unico's are a bit overpriced unless you need something to support a specific Schertler pickup.

I have a Fishman Loudbox Artist that sounds great with my either my Lollar JS equipped '77 L-5CN or with my full acoustic archtops.
The EQ is great, with the mid control at 750Hz, just where I like it, and the anti-feedback function is a sweepable (15Hz to 330Hz) notch filter that's perfect for reducing the low boom and body resonant feedback. Two inputs with combo 1/4" and XLR inputs with phantom power complete the package.
And it's a light weight, one box solution.
-
if we're talking mics that don't need phantom power, any amp with two ins and an xlr-->1/4" cable and you're good to go. done it with the old j77 every now and again. one stop gigging solution. though, if you go this route and don't have separate channels/eqs, you may want some extra volume/eq options on the floor in between the guitar and amp in pedal form.
-
check out the ZT acoustic lunchbox.......... has dual channel, DI/loop/ phantom power/ ...just add an extension speaker and the sound is huge for it's size... oh did i mention cheap too so good bang for your buck

Ha Keira , I've literally been waiting to try a ZT LBA in the UK for 6 months !

Not sure if you can get these for 200 to 300 Pounds, (What is the current exchange on Pounds vs US Dollars?),

It does have a balanced XLR mic input on the front and a balanced XRL mic level o/p on the back panel
as well as an unbalanced line level o/p and of course a ground lift switch. It has the Alesis DSP
(Digital Effects Processor) for dialing up most effects (except WAH of course), including
a simulated plate echo-reverb. !0 inch speaker and about 25 watts. They sell for around $445 US new.

This demo is one of the newer models..
