    Nope, the American Special comes in 3-colour 'burst, Oly white and Vintage Blonde, all with a maple fretboard. That's what annoys me about Fender. For that price, you should be able to pick any durn colour, the fretboard, the fret wire, the neck contour, the nut width etc... But you can't. Unless you get a G&L :wink:
    That's the only thing that separates the Special and Standard. The Standard range has countless options for fingerboards and colours. Different pickups as well. I think they got the balance about right with the Special. You get to choose out of three of the most popular colours. I must admit though that my 3 colour sunburst would look much nicer with a rosewood neck. But thats another story.

    Yes, if it's primarily being used for jazz then go for it. Be mindful that you will have to lower the pickups if you put the heavier strings on as they are set a little too high in the factory.

    I use a 1999 fender "Fat" Tele for straightahead jazz guitar quite a bit. I think if you put on some 10 or 11 gauge flatwound strings on, do a little intonation, truss rod setup tweaking you will be very very happy with the results.
