    I think I might want a 15" single-cutaway semi-hollow with dual humbuckers, a 24.75 to 25" scale and a nut width of 1 11/16 to 1 3/4" - and preferably not too heavy. What I'm actually looking for, I guess, is a poor man's Sadowsky Semi-Hollow. I'm in no rush - I'd have to sell a few things first - but, the three that are currently on my radar are:

    Comins GCS-1;
    Godin Montreal Premiere;
    Taylor T-3 (if I can get a deal).

    Has anybody tried more than one of the above? Is there anything else with the stated specs and a similar street price I should be considering? I already have a dedicated full hollow-body single-pickup Jazz guitar, so this will be an all-purpose Jazz/Pop/Rock alternative. (Do NOT want a 335 clone - want it to be about 15" wide and a single-cutaway configuration.)

    Thanks!

    I think Woody's right: The ES-135/137s are 16" wide. Actually, so is the Taylor. I am really comfortable with the 15" width (when standing). It would seem that my choice is between the Comins GCS-1 and the Godin Montreal Premier. Now if an old Heritage Academy Custom happened to fall into my lap ... !

    What do you mean by poor? (How much $?) How about the D'Angelico EX-SS?

    Godin Montreal Premiere
    Comins GCS
    D'Angelico EX

    I'm pretty sure that's it for under $2000.

    Thanks Woody & Ryan - I think those are the 3 to choose from in my target range, which is up to $1500. As far as the D'Angelico is concerned, I think I prefer a stop tailpiece on this type of guitar, but it's still worth checking out.

    I don't know about the new ones, but the older models (which were nicer cosmetically btw) came in either trapeze or stop. I have one with the stop. Paid about $1200(?) I think. If you can find a used one.

    Hey Tom,
    I discovered a guy in Tacoma, Washington who hand-makes custom guitars..one at a time, at a very reasonable price!
    I just started talking to him about doing a build for me, that sounds pretty much like the guitar you are looking for! I'm going to have to sell a guitar or two also. But, what we decided on so far will be about $1400 tops..And we are talking a hand-made one of a kind guitar, MADE IN USA. Check-out his site johnnymacguitars.com

    If you send him an e-mail, tell him Wayne sent ya!

    BTW; I don't know John personally, or work for him, but I am going to have him build a guitar for me.

    Samick Royale series, about $450, can't be beat. Get two,then you can modify one. I put an RMC midi pickup system in mine, it's made me more money than any other guitar I own.

    If you shop around you can probably find a used Paul Reed Smith Hollowbody for around $2,000. It makes a great jazz guitar and will pretty much do anything else you want.

    Just went to his website but unfortunately one cannot find a single photo of a single complete guitar on his website! Next time you're in touch with him, you might want to advise him to beef up his website. I could have been interested but there's precious little there to entice me.

    They are great, but at 13" across, much smaller than he seems to prefer.

    Hey Tom, I am having similar thoughts about adding another guitar but I would need to sell my customized Tele to make it happen.
    I will be looking for semi-hollow model probably a 15 " lower bout, a 24 3/4 " or 25 " scale, a neck width a little wider than 1 3/4 " (1 7/8 or 1 13/16 ") to make chord melody more compatible with my old hands. I would not be too fussy about the color other than some type brown or something similar to my Sadowsky. It should have a body-mounted high quality pick-up similar to the one that comes with my Sadowsky Jim Hall model. I would need it to have both a quality volume and tone control (body-mounted). The body should be a minimum of 2 " to a maximum of 2.5 ". The body cut-a-way should be similar to the Sadowsky guitars. The carved top should be high quality Spruce and the bottom & sides should be a high quality Maple. The neck should be a dark Rosewood with a matching fingerboard with no inlays. It should have tall, thin stainless steel frets. I know there are other specs but that's all I can bring to mind at this time.
    It's only a thinking, study project for the time being but I am giving the possibility of a new guitar a lot of attention.

    I've been intrigued with the Eastman El Rey guitars. They are 14" with an unusual shape. Jack Zucker gets some really nice tones out of one on youtube.

    Few questions ...

    1) Does Eastman offer something that is competitive here?

    2) Do you guys think that (putting price aside) the Collings/Sadowsky offerings are a meaningful cut above?

    Thanks!

    Interesting responses - thanks! But my GAS attack is over, because I just don't want to sell the great Tele and 335 clones I already have - and that's what I'd have to do to fund the acquisition - for something I think I might want ... that, and I need new skis.

    With all due respect, Tom, I just don't think you're thinking clearly about this matter. That's not how GAS works. First you need to acquire the new axe, then think about how you're gonna pay for it, dabble with the notion of selling something to fund the already-completed acquisition, realize this is not the best time for a sale given the economy, and them limp along sheepishly avoiding your spouse until the next pang of an attack overcomes you and you begin the cycle again. It's really not that hard to understand how it all works if you just make a modicum of effort in that direction.
