I own a EHX 22 Caliber. They really need a preamp like a Tech 21 Blonde or something in front of them (so they're treated like a poweramp and not plugged straight in with a guitar). I don't use it alot and have read the same things. But honestly, I don't find mine noisy or harsh. Maybe I'm just not as picky, I don't know. The 44 should have decent headroom.

I didn't push it enough to distort (I had the 22 Caliber volume at like 9:00ish and it was plenty loud/clean for home practice). That said, I'll take my tube amps any day of the week! Maybe that's why I don't notice any noise as I'm used to tube amps that sometimes make a small amount of noise? Or maybe mine just happens to be a lucky, noise-less one. Don't know.
