I would REALLY try the RC Booster in front of the JC-77... mine is a clone and is slightly modded but they should sound similar. The RC with the EQ at noon is flat so it can be just a flat frequency warmer.

Another vote for the RC Booster. Very versatile. I've only used it with my solidbody but it's a great pedal- very transparent. It's my desert island pedal.

ok, i gave it a shot. i hoped that it would usurp my liquid blues, but it did not. but in concert- quite nice. the gain obviously didn't add much grit, but that's fine. it works as an "instant jazz" setting, highs slightly cut, bass slightly boosted. hell, even with all knobs at 12 oclock, it wasn't bad. i'll need to keep messing with knobs and find a happy medium between the amp, preamp and rc booster. the hollowbodies can handle a flat eq on the jc-77, but other guitars cannot.

so i guess it'll stick around for now. i had hoped to clear out some space and raise some cash, but i guess i'll just have to live with awesome tone instead. such is life. much obliged, fellas.

I'm curious if the OP ever came up with a workable solution.
