I can comment about the PJ cub, but not the super cub, if that's useful..compared with my mambo 10, the cub has quite low headroom, and I find the cub tone controls to sound rather 'scooped' ( to get a passable jazz sound, I have to turn the mid control to max). This could be due to the tiny 5" speakers in the cub. The mambo is much louder and more tonally versatile, and is specifically geared towards getting a juicy, mid-oriented 'modern polytone' sound, plus a fenderish sound option if that's what you like. The cub is a decent ( acoustic ??) amp, but not one that it's easy to get a mainstream jazz sound from, at least for me.

The cub is very portable at 11 lb., but the mambo is not far behind in portability terms.

    I can tell you that in early 2014, I bought a Mambo amp ( a 12" actually)
recommended by Franz1997, I am very happy with it for its portability,
and superb sound and tone, with every Archtop I have had. Having had all
of the Fenders including a Custom 15 and various others, the Mambo is
hard to beat ( I have an AER 60-3, an EvansAH.and a Polytone 15") but
the Mambo takes preference, with the Evans a close second.
If I had the need, or excuse, for another amp it would be the 10" Wedge,
    no question.

    Hey Franz 1997

Just noticed that you assisted me back in 2011 when I was looking at the Phil Jones Super cub...

Must look you up again in six years when the mambo's getting tired and the next new thing is coming out.

I have advised Jon I want to go ahead with an order and I am looking forward to trying the unit out.

    cheers

    Mike

I've been here a while and just now checked the Mambo site.. interesting - I could use a super clean amp. Do these take pedals well?

I run a Marshall and a Trainwreck Express clone now so I have plenty of gain already..

I'm often playing through a Carl Martin Parametric Preamp => TC ditto Stereo => Ernie Ball passive volume pedal into my Mambo 8" Wedge and this works fine.

I don't use any "extreme" pedals, but mambo 10 wedge + tc electronic mojo mojo sounds really good. It gives a very nice crunch without really distorting. It also sounds great with chrorus and delay, but I rarely use that: the amp doesn't need it.The amp without any pedals is very sensitive to the intensity of picking, and sounds very close to a tube amp. It never runs out of headroom, even at full blast, but has a very nice "edge" to the sound, like a tubeamp on the verge of distorting. Hard to explain - apologies for my second-rate prose...

    regards,

    Bruno.

Thanks, that sounds exactly what I had in mind. I have a mojo mojo on my shopping list, I was originally hoping to use it with my marshall's clean channel for some light grit sounds.

I have to inquire more from Jon himself about the mambo amps at some point

I got this pedal after a glowing review on this forum; very cheap, and really good pedal. You won't regret buying it (and even if you do, it's only 50 bucks...).

    Hi!

I'm looking for an amp, and i have been reading amaizing things about the mambo 10" amp i that forum, I'm from the basque country, living in Barcelona now, and its going to be imposible to test them.

I have also in mind the Quilter Mach Pro II HD12, has anyone play with those amp? And in comparison with the mambo?

I play jazz but i'm looking for some versatile amp, to play with pedals and make some ambient music also. Something near to tubeamps.

    Thanks!!!

(Sorry, my english is no the best)

They are both great amps. The mambo is a bit darker and has more of a polytone vibe whereas the quilter has a bit more in your face mids. It's hard to go wrong with either one.

If you play funk, rock, fusion or a solid body, the quilter is a lot more versatile. If you want that '60s Joe Pass tone, the mambo is probably a bit ahead...
