Cube 80x far and away is my favorite. Versatility aside, I'd take the JC Clean of the Cube over the JC120. It just sounds more 'acoustic' and less 'stiff'. I will say, tho, that the JC120 sounded great for single note runs with a pick.

It looks as though the Cube will survive yet another amp purchase and sell. It's lasted about 4 amps now which is apparently 3.5 Barry-Amp Years.

As mentioned in another thread, the Henriksen is getting a seriously hard look to be the next to take on my Cube.

I have a Cube 60 and I'd love to know if the C80 will give me a little more clean vol. But the reviews I've read don't seem to indicate so.

How much do you need? Haha. Seriously, tho, I wouldn't expect much more overall volume. Mine stays pretty clean and gets plenty loud for my purposes.

Silly question.. does the Cube have a second speaker out? If it is "almost" but not quite there you can also maybe kinds sorta look at a higher efficiency speaker (if you are so inclined, no obligation of course).

I've read 60 vs 80X reviews. The 80 isn't any louder if you're playing clean.

Used, they are cheap and readily available . One Cube not enough? Run two.

It does. I've used it for rock situations but never for cleaner stuff. Not really sure where I'd go with changing out the speaker. It does sound very, very good.

I need to take some time to really go to stores and play. I'd need to take my guitar because most of the places I have access too seem to not have much in the way of carved archtops.

I don't really know any active amp builders so getting one built seems to be somewhat out of the question. No doubt it would get spendy. I could component build it. Could probably get a pretty impressive sounding system for around $1k. It would just mean a pedal board would be in tow.

Of course, but ah, how do you know the rating of the current speaker to know what you need to improve on it?

Does anyone have any experience with the difference in the clean sound and volume between the cube60 with a closed back cab and a blues cube60 and it's open back cab?

    Not a 60. Sorry.

Found a setting on the Cube 80x I just love. It was almost a forgotten setting for me. Although id say to anyone that the Dlx Combo was a great setting, it'd been years since ive used it. On a lark, I turned that setting on. Wonderful. That is pretty much what I'm going for. Low volume and buttery tone.

I have owned both. It's been years, but if I remember correctly, the Blues Cube is a dirtier amp. And a lot heavier. Oh, and technically, the Cube 60 is not a closed-back amp. If you look, there is about a half inch space between the head and the back panel.

I know what you mean and I tend to agree.

But it just seems so weird to me that this would be true! The JC Clean is a digital model of the JC120, isn't it? The model of the thing sounds better than the thing itself? Seems strange, and kinda funny.

I have an old-school JC60 (one speaker, like a JC120 cut in half). And a little MicroCube. And I tend to like the MicroCube sound better. At least for jazzy archtop playing.

Plus it doesn't make that scary "thooomp" sound when I switch it on, like the JC60 does!

I recently bought an old Polytone MB, so the JC60 has been pushed aside for the moment. (Though it does have a really killer cold, clean Nordic fjord kinda ECM Terje Rypdal frozen tundra sound that can be a great sound in the right context.)

Funny thing is that the JC Clean and JC120 sound very, very similar. The difference is that 'acousticness' and 'less stiffness' in the Cube.

Dying to find the amp that is just a mo' betta version of the sound I get from the DLX Reverb model in the Cube. Kinda wondering if the Barber Barb EQ/Strymon Blue Sky into the Henriksen Soundclone is the way to go. Or, if I can find a small power amp I can pedal board mount, maybe a Redstone cab.

I have a Cube 80XL and have also played a Cube 60 and I get more volume out of the 80, surprised to hear commentary to the contrary. Interesting that you like the Cube better than the real JC since the Cube is supposed to model the JC.

I also played a Henriksen once at a jam session and love the tone, but I could by two and a half Cube 80XL for the price of the Henriksen.

Ok, something is apparently going wrong in the JC120. So... I may end up revising this Cube vs JC120 assessment.

I've been noticing an intermittent but VERY noisy rumble from the JC. Not the normal JC120 low hiss but like there is a bad connection. Last night, on a lark, I turned it on and there was that noise then, in a sudden loud pop, it was gone. Just the low hiss.

The JC was now sounding as full and lush as I remember. Still very IN YOUR FACE but lush. However, the Reverb wasn't quite gone but it was so low even with the control at full that it wasn't even discernable really.

So... I think I found the issue. I plan on taking it to an amp tech friend of mine later this month when I have a day off for his assessment.

Once I get that square, I will revisit this 'VS' thread.

Do you mean the older orange Cube 60, or the modern Cube 60 with the models?

I have one question. I once had a cube 80x for about a year and especially the dlx setting was a great improvement, but I sold it because it became very noisy after 7 or 8 months. do you guys had similar experiences? before I bought the cbe 80x I had the cube 30x which was really a good workhorse and for most of the gigs I had during this time the cube 30x was loud enough (believe or not). I heard that hiss is a problem that happens quiet often with roland. can you confirm that? I believe that if this cube 80x wouldn't have gotten noisy than I wouldn't have sold it and I would still use it as mý main amp.

Mine is very quiet. I am guessing it was just a thing in yours. I have had mine for a few years now and, even then, I got it used. Roland JC120's on the other hand, have an inherent hiss to them. Mine is very low though... when it isn't doing that rumble thing that I am having looked at.

Love them or hate them, one thing Roland is known for is reliability. Sure, things happen, one may not be as solid as another, but on the whole, they take a WHOLE lot and keep ticking.

Just goofy. Now the problem seems to have stopped altogether on the JC120.

Maybe just some dirt got in the contacts and it got worked out. No clue. It seems to be back to its unforgiving self. Every now hit too light and you'll know about it. Ha ha. That amp is the bathroom light of amps: every blemish is apparent. Ha ha

My JC55 has really low volume sometimes... weak reverb as well.
I power it down and back up.. it works. It only does it on power up and maybe one time in five.
I pulled to board to take a look.. cleaned pots and retensioned the input jack as best as I could.
No joy. I live with it only because I don't gig with it.
