Obviously, this is the Rat modified version.
I was up for one of these but the Ampeg worked out around the same price with the Thomman discount plus the GVT has a 12" speaker which is also what I wanted. I did consider the Rat modded V5 in a different cab with a 12" speaker but the overall costs exceeded what little coin I had to play with.

That aside, the line out feature looks good and the sag options could get you some useful 40's wooly jazz tone.

In fact, as I was reading up on the amp before pulling the trigger, I noticed that you had mentioned it to me last year. Perhaps later this year, I will try to mike the babe up for a couple of recordings, having concluded from listening to Youtube clips that speaker diameter shouldn't be much of an issue with close microphone placement.

For now, I consider it a great little solution to have a strightforward guitar rig handy next to my office desk. The reverb really does make a difference in this context.

Hm, sounds great. Something specific in mind, to give me an idea?

Well, I really like that Charlie Christian pickup sound. He used an EH 150 15 watt amp that had two controls, volume and a tone switch. The switch gave you either bass or treble tone (much like the Fender Exelsior amp). I'm thinking with a low output single coil neck pickup (even a CC pickup) with flatwounds and amp tone on bassy with full rectifier valve sag on the V5, this might get you close.

With a graphic EQ pedal you could boost the mids and try for the Grant Green tone?!?

The Ampeg GVT bass & treble tone controls that are flat in the 12 o'clock position and can boost or cut frequencies, the middle control just boosts from zero to '11'. I can spend hours messing around with the tone controls and over time I have found a few settings for roundwound and flatwound stringed guitars that I like.

    Just mess around and enjoy

"Swing to Bop" on the V5? Very tempting. Need to explore that.

Perhaps you're right and this is the time for me to think about getting myself an EQ pedal after all. I have always shied away from these lest I'd be going nuts over endless tweaking possibilities.

I can report similar experience with my Koch Studiotone, although I haven't had much time to spend playing the guitars lately. Dr. Alzheimer told me he has archived the settings for me.
