What is a nice guitar without a nice guitar strap to hang it on you. I have noticed many of the greats have fancy guitar straps, many appear custom made.

I do realize much of this is vanity, yet I have to say I am really enjoying this strap for my archtop.

It is by Gibson and is called The Classic.

    Mono GS1 for me:
    :: MONO ::
Have one in the ash grey duraweave finish. Nice neutral colour fabric that looks fine over smart clothes and is not obviously 'rock' or whatever. It's a wide strap so helps with a heavy or deep guitar.

I bought a dark brown of these last year and a black one a few weeks ago. If you like straps like Wes Montgomery's.

    Another one of my limitations.

I just have to have some sort of strap when I play seated. You are in some pretty good company there, Cozzy.

If you like soft and comfortable straps these can't be beat. I have one, absolutely the most comfortable I have ever used. IMO of course.

Guys, some dude (I think that's what you say for "chap"on your side of the big fishpond) tried to sell me some luxury massaged cow skin.

Being a sort of Yorkshireman (something like your Texans) I said somefink like "Wey up me bonnie lad, where theres muck ther's brass, are you for planet ZONG".

Please don't encroach on the re-cycled cow skin market, or if you do, PM me so we can form a cartel to keep those pesky goatskin sellers out.

Why do people need Leather? In India, where, sadly enough, much of the world's leather is produced (to export to Europe and North America), the leather industry is founded on lie upon murderous lie. It's actually illegal to kill cows in most Indian states, so the leather industry preys on very poor people (Of which there are not few) to sell them their cows, on assurances that they will live out their lives on farms. Then these animals are set on these monstrous death marches hundreds or thousands of miles away, to a state where it is legal to murder cows. It is barbarity personified.

Seriously, you can't find excellent guitar straps that are made from synthetic materials?

NSJ, the things we do to animals on a daily basis are totally reprehensible. When I was young, I had to learn to desensitize myself and turn from the carnage or I would get very disturbed.

Of course, there are some people like a relative of mine, who feels his pet dogs are about equal to a pair of his old boots.

There just seems to be something wrong with that way of thinking.

I love leather! I had some nice suede Levi's straps but they don't really work with heavier guitars. They curl up on my shoulder and all the weight hangs down the middle part. Not nice!

On a recent guitar event someone sold me a leftover padded leather strap from Levi's (with a 80% percent discount!). Nice and black and sturdy enough to not curl up. It works well.

Another option is to go to a saddle maker and have him cut a strap for you. Probably cheaper than those Levi's straps and you can have them exactly your size! I know of a few friends who did this and it worked out very well.

I am glad you posted this. I don't think anything is more evil than the way the human species collectively treats animals. It's scary shit but most of us live in ignorance, and that's no way to be.

It depends on how heavy your guitar is really heavy a thick one to cover more of your arm a really light guitar a strap with a thinner belt that doesn,t dig in to your muscle.

Those Mono straps look like something I'd like, I appreciate comfort more as I get older. Thanks for posting David B.

I have some great straps on both sides of the pro/con leather aisle.

If you like vintage style then I have an Eldorado which is the old style with the thinner strap and sliding pad.
They have updated the design and made them out of beautiful "last the rest of your life" leathers.
    Love it.

On the animal free side I just got a Mono Betty. VERY comfortable padded strap. Bought because I like the multiple other pieces of Mono gear I've bought. One caution....they have a long and a short version. I bought the short version as I wear my guitar pretty high. With a Fender style guitar I have it as short as it will go, which happens to be in perfect position. With an
archtop or semi, I'd check with them on the range of adjustment you need.

I just received my Italia straps and now, as a lapsed vegetarian, to boot, you guys are making me feel guilty.

What kind of cowboy boot do y'all wear then?

I got my MONO GS1 BETTY strap today. I am impressed and cautiously optimistic. I have an 8 lb 4 oz (3.7 kg) solid body that I don't play much anymore because of the weight. I played it for an hour and a half straight tonight and it felt pretty good. The strap seems to breathe pretty well too. I'll report back again after some time has gone by and the honeymoon is over.

It has been 18 months, so I guess the honeymoon is over, and I'm still a very big fan of the MONO Betty straps. For me, they are the most comfortable straps because they breathe and because they have ample padding, which conforms to my body shape and distributes weight. They can also be quickly and easily adjusted for length, and the adjustment stays where you put it. Bettys come in a limited selection of plain colors, and the outside material varies by color. But the inside material - the side next to your body - is the same breathable and comfortably conforming material.

Two downsides and a nitpick: First, there are short (40"-46") and long versions (47"-59"), which I find inconvenient. I have one of each now, but I would so like to see MONO make a one size fits all version, because the speed and ease of adjustment would let me use a one size fits all strap more interchangeably across guitars. Second, the MONO straps don't make much of a fashion statement. This doesn't bother me, but it can be a legitimate concern wherever showmanship is an issue. The nitpick was pointed out by an Amazon reviewer, and it is that the clay color looks darker (more like gray) than the pictures. One of my Bettys is clay and I don't care about this, but the criticism is a fair one IMO.

The Bettys get fairly good reviews at Musician's Friend and Amazon. They are not cheap - and not particularly pretty either - but the comfort is well worth the price to me.
