    The Gibson S V basically is a super 400 neck in an L5 body with a different tailpiece, the one that can be regulated individually in tension for each string.

    The Le Grand is a custom model. There is one now for sale at Mandolin Brothers so you can check detailed specs and pics at Mandolin Brothers, Ltd.

    I would add that Super V's are typically CES guitars (two built in pickups) although I think I have heard of a few acoustic/floating pickup super V's. The LeGrande is an acoustic archtop with a floating pickup - basically a modern vesrion of the Johnny Smith, except it has a 25.5" scale and a 1 11/16" nut.

    Those last two guitars are not my favorite color.

    I'm looking for a floating pu.
    I've seen bireli lagrene playng a super V in a guitar duet and his guitar had the floating pu.
    Now I'm trading with a guy who is selling a legrande, a guitar I never noticed before: it has the floating as well: it looks like identical to the super V w/floating pu.
    only difference:the tune-o-matic on the legrande where the super V has a wooden bridge and the tailpiece that is identical but reveresed.
    It looks that dimensions, woods and shape areidentical; even the headstock...

    so, why a different name?

    Another difference you can see on the Super V vs the LeGrande is the finger tailpiece tines are opposite between the two guitars.

    There is a guitar called the Heritage Johnny Smith. It's a floater with 25"scale,1 3/4"nut,and tunable tailpiece. Still available at $2500.

    The Super V was a creation of Bruce J. Bolen in the mid-70s to stimulate Gibson archtop sales. The Super V is based on the Gibson L-5CES. Gibson grafted the neck and appointments of the Super 400 on it.

    There was a production run of Super V with the floating BJB pickup in 1979 from 1983. 1979 Gibson Super V . This one is based on the L-5C.

    So, Gibson L-5C begat Gibson Johnny Smith which begat Gibson Le Grand. Gibson L-5C begat Gibson L-5CES which begat Gibson Super V. Gibson L-5C begat Gibson Super V with BJB pup.

    The Tune-o-matic saddle is interchangeable with a wooden saddle. It is one of player preference.
    thank you.
    so, if I have well understood, the differences between SuperV w/floating pup and LeGrande are:
    opposite tailpiece;
    3" 3/8 vs 3" width;
    TOM vs wooden bridge;

    both are:
    17" wide
    25,5" scale
    hand carved top back and sides
    parallel braced
    BJB pup

    am I right?

    I ask you this because I love the super V BJB tone but I found an used legrande and I'M WONDERING IF THEIR TONE COULB BE equal.

    All I can add is that Peter Mazza plays a beautiful Super V and sounds fantastic on it. I want it!
