If anyone else has opinions on how this amps behaves with drummers don't hesitate
Having tried the Cub, admittedly a while ago, I think that it would be perfect for a solo guitarist, or a drumless duo; but I wouldn't use it with any of the drummers with whom I work. None of them is particularly loud; but this amp is IMHO very quiet indeed.

It produce great sound with arch-top for studio recordings.Exelent small speakers!
In my experience sounds great at low volumes with a carved archtop but too "pure" to my ears with a laminate jazzbox - ymmv ...

Thanks guys, I think I will get a small cab to the Henriksen and use it (or the JMUL) for small gigs with drummers.

But I will still probably trade the AC-60 for the Phil Jones, that size / weight is just very practical.

I fiddled around with the Cub last night using both my Holst laminate and my Buscarino jazztele. The guitars use identical Buscarino humbuckers (basically Kent Armstrong PAFs) and use TI Swing flat 12's.

It sounds better with the Holst - more character to the sound. It sounds great the the jazztele too, but as I mentioned earlier when I A/B'd it against my friend's USA Fender tele strung with rounds (not TI...probably 11's), the difference was even bigger than between my two guitars.

I prefer the sound with the Holst, but I think the Cub can produce more total volume using the jazztele.

As for feedback, unless I had the Cub and my Holst volume both totally dimed while I was standing right in front of the amp and facing it, basically not an issue.

The EQ is very sensitive to small adjustments, as others have mentioned. Boosting the mids produces more of an "electric" jazz guitar tone, but at the expense of some boominess on lower-middle register notes. I tried to balance that out by decreasing the bass a bit, and had some success.

The Cub is inspiring me to get more passionate about solo guitar playing. I've spent the last year mostly ignoring that and focusing on learning how to play with others, but I think I'm going to dedicate one or two days a week to solo stuff now.

Some more playing with the Cub yesterday resulted in more thoughts:

    - this thing is very responsive to touch, dynamics, etc. I feel I can vary my volume output through dynamics more than I can with the ZT.
    - playing with the guitar volume fairly open gives a more electric-ish tone. It certainly gives me a more electric than the clip you can hear on Sound Island's website (which by the way is a sweet website...the Comins jazz amp clip there sounds amazing...).
    - you'd never believe I was playing a solid body guitar if you heard me using my jazztele through the Cub...you'd say it was a good laminate electric...it's got some woodiness and crispness to the attack that I definitely could not get through the ZT. That may apply to most solid-bodies with humbuckers (my friend's Fender tele had a single coil neck pup).
    - using my laminate Holst in a smallish room (20' x 12 ' with high ceilings; open on each side to other rooms) with volume on the amp and guitar totally dimed does result in some feedback, but at that point it is seriously loud (quite a bit louder than you'd use in a coffee shop) and backing off the guitar volume just a tad eliminates the feedback.

So not loud enough for an all-in-one amp if you ever play with drummers, but still a sweet amp to have in one's arsenal and I have absolutely no regrets about purchasing it. It seems like the perfect home amp and yet is still totally usable for real playing situations. My ZT Lunchbox is now in the sub-trunk area of my car in a small tote bag together with its power cord and patch cable, but I'll certainly bring the Cub out of the house for the right occasions...

I just broke mine out to go play with a friend (he plays a nylon stringed flamenco guitar) at his house last night. I played my Jim Hall, and it was just the right volume, the right clarity, the right transparency. Really nice sounding amp, not loud at all. But headroom aside, perfect for playing quietly with clarity and transparency. Ideally made for an acoustically minded guitar, like an archtop.

Phil Jones is mainly known for making bass amps and bass cabinets, but I own his small acoustic guitar amp, the AG-100:

It's a very clean amp that sounds good with archtops, if you like more of an acoustic versus electric sound to the archtop. I use it with my T-style, but it could be warmer in that case.

I just saw this video from NAMM 2013 about a new amp more geared to electric guitars. It's a light (25lbs) 500W (!!!) 8" combo called the Air Pulse One Eight:

Liquid cooled speaker! It's not on his web site yet.

I have the CUB AG-100 too. I've noticed that I prefer how it sounds when it is turned on its side and slightly tilted back (with a small 2X4 block). I can't explain why. Maybe I am just crazy...

Crazy enough to anticipate the AG-150...

Well, I did not anticipate, I actually tried it after playing the AG-150...

I wouldn't mind trading up my AG-100 for the two channel and horizontal configuration AG-150 but I don't have the funds for it at the moment...

The Cub 100 is, in my opinion, one of the best acoustic guitar amp ever. I use it when I play at church with the choir ... input is a pre Ultrasound DI Max goes where the signal of the two guitars, a Yamaha L-10A with K & K Pure Mini and an amplified guitar with nylon Barcus Berry piezo ... everything is perfect and sounds great, the Cub has everything you need and great quality, it's wonderful!
Perhaps the only Cub 300 is better.
Then look curiously at the new amp for my arch-top.

The new amp sounds interesting. Would like to see a clean demo of course. Would have liked to see reverb included and maybe a tweeter with a pot to control it so you could use it as your acoustic amp too.

My main concern is $$$. I'm guessing over $1500. Phil Jones amps are high end. It's funny that this new amp's 8" speaker is the *largest* in their amps. All the others are 4" or 5".

I prefer to get reverb from a stomp box because I'm a tweaker. I'm also waiting for my chorus pedal, so I've been preparing by using the Hall Of Fame's modulated reverb.

BTW, I've been doing the following when playing my T-style guitar through the AG-100, to get a thumpy Pat Martino tone. On the amp I max the mid control and turn the treble and bass all the way down (or nearly that extreme). On the guitar I back off the tone half way and roll off the volume to taste. I suppose it is a bit like the other Pat's thumpy sound, without his delay and processing.

(With my archtop, it's flat EQ, or ease off the bass if it's boomy in the room.)

Have you tried turning the AG-100 all the way up? Interesting...

I love the AG-100. Still, I got a CUB AG-150 this week end via some trades (involving letting the AG-100 go ). I may eventually miss the AG-100, but I am very happy to have gotten the two channel AG-150 (I also sing). Only had time to play it for about half an hour so far. I'll report after I spend more time with it.
