Well after seeing and hearing so much about these guitars I had to try one. I must say that I am impressed at the tone and balance. And stunning sunburst! It plays great, sounds great, and looks great! All at an affordable price. This guitar is actually making me think about how much I really need the expensive ones. They just don't seem to be that much better. In the early 80's I had a George Benson GB20. The larger bodied Benson. I thought it was comparable to the Gibsons of the day. I was wrong then but these New Yorkers are even a step or two above the GB20's level. There are so many quality made, yet less costly, guitars out there. Anyway here she is. Who out there has one of these?

She's a beauty brother! Congrats!!! Love that sunburst!
One in that shade sold on feebay about 2 weeks ago. If you want to hear it really come alive swap that pup for a Steve Bistrow made by Tom Shorter. TS made one specifically for that identical guitar in that same shade. Great pup that came as a pup swap in that first blonde Vestax NYL2 I had a few months back.
Steve Bistrow Western Swing/ Jazz Floater
here's the youtube video of the exact guitar before I bought it...the sound is mic'd off the computer and nothing like the actual pup in the guitar...the archtop sounded killer when it landed.

Yeah,I remember that one. That TS pick up sounds great. But I'm happy with the stock one. For now... Surprised you sold that one. You've had some beauty's go through your hands this year. It's like Xmas all the time. Waiting for FedEx every week.

I bought the guitar so right I couldn't resist taking an offer for a $1200 profit...it went to Malaysia. You may recall I got the blue NYL2 a few weeks later...it of course had the stock pup...it was not the same guitar bro...that TS floater made a big difference...you'd be surprised.

Beautiful guitar! No way you could be anything but thrilled with that one. The color and the shading of the color is beautiful. Congrats on your NGD.

Great guitar! I have the NYL-5 and I love it to death.....so easy to play and such a beautiful sound.

Wow, Gz there!!!

Thanks Guys,There was a sweet little 16" set in that sold off Ebay yesterday. I hope someone here picked it up. I've got the fever for some more of these little treasures. Isn't this just a great hobby?!

So we have D'Angelico New Yorker's made in Japan.
Then we have D'Aquisto New Yorker's made in Korea.
Correct?
Also I note that some of the D'Aquisto New Yorker's are sporting the tailpieces and headstocks of Peerless guitars.
So....... same guitar different name?

She's a classic beauty! Happy NGD!

As Philco has brought up,there are more than one D'Angelico's out there. Now that I have bought the Vestex version I'm wondering what the Korean NY'ers are like. I saw one at Dream Guitars' site and I was impressed. What those photos show is a fine looking guitar with even better appointments than the Vestex. What do those guitars sound and play like? And why does the general guitar public feel they are a lesser guitar? Anyone out there own one of the Korean DA's ? P.S. Thank you David B

Ive owned both, the Japanese V. version is a much better quality guitar,in my opinion. I have another one in Natural finish being delivered next Tues.if Its half as good as my last one ,Ill be selling off a few of my other archtops next week LOL!

Yes, the Vestax D'A's are made in Japan. To the best of my knowledge they're still being produced in Japan, but not being distributed in the US.

Here's the Imperial...there was also a D'Angelico Excel produced in Korea since 2004, and they too to the best of my knowledge have been discontinued. The Imperial below is blonde and the Excel is that old school Amber.

Yeah brother. I've been preaching about the Korean D'A's on this forum for over a year. They're the real deal. They perform like archtops many times more expensive. It's all about PERCEPTION! We know the drill....it's Korean, it must be crap. Whatever.

But the thing about the low priced Korean D'A, if you pull that KA floater and drop in a Tom Short-Steve Bistro floater, man you've got yerself a $3k-$4k sounding jazz archtop right there.
I've owned 4 of them now, with one remaining. If you think there's a bang for buck value on the Vestax D'A, wait 'til you sample the Korean Excel.
Roger owned several I believe. I bought his former wine burst...sure was a pretty archtop. I still have my Amber version, number 106 of the first 200 produced, which has a certificate of same...these were promoted as being "special"...fact is they're built like the others later were...but just the same it's a solid archtop that easily competes with a $3-$4k archtop IF one does the needed work to set them up properly. There's web info out there of same. I'm running TI Benson 14's on mine, and the thing plays and sounds like the real deal.
Here's Roger's former EXL-1DP, aka, the bling model for its abalone inlay around the archtop edge...tastefully done... I bought the Excel from him off feebay. I'd previously seen Roger's vids on youtube and recognized his username when I bought it...that was before I began regularly posting here.

Ya wanna know what I think is wrong with the Vestax and the Korean D'As? They're a few layers of binding short on the headstocks. That's all. I'll go find a good luthier and have the headstocks rebound ---- or not.

Here is a Japanese D'Angelico
D'Angelico New Yorker Archtop Jazz Guitar D'Aquisto Jazz Guitar | eBay
and a D'Aquisto (Japanese or Korean?)
D'Aquisto New Yorker Archtop Jazz Guitar Dangelico Jazz Guitar | eBay
So....if the D'Angelico is Korean......why is it so expensive?
-
Happy I didn't see it. I'd have been tempted, especially with that set pup. But 16", nahhhh...how's about an 18"er w/a set pup! Great info about Vestax posted by the seller...worth the read.

No, the D'Angelico is a Japanese Vestax NY'er. And the D'Aquisto is also a Japanese made archtop, probably from the identical "Terada" factory in Nagoya, Japan, not a MIK Excel version, as the Amber and Wine pair in photos above.

Thanks 2bornot2bop.
Yeah I have dealt with this seller. He is a good guy.
I bought my Wesmo and a Gibson 775 from him.

That was the reason for my starting this thread. That blonde DA at Archtop dream on Ebay. I wrote to him because of the different specs on his guitar. I asked them if that was a Vestex. The case is a black single cradle, the tailpiece is a hinged Excel style, the fretboard has no cupids bow,and the top and headstock both have an extra layer of bindings. That guitar is simply better looking than my Vestex. They wrote back and said it was NOT a Vestex. I take it that it is a Korean model but,I didn't think they even produced a New Yorker only the Excel. Anyone else seen a Korean New Yorker?
-
I read somewhere that they did produce some kind of New Yorker after D'Angelico of America stopped selling the NYL-2. That may be one of those that I don't think they make or possibly export to the U.S. anymore. I also noticed the different appointments from the NYL-2 and they look a lot better and are more true to the original. I'll have to do a little research on it to see what it is.
-
I did some research on a bunch of the different D'A reissue brands that I knew. This one for me is a bit of a dilemma. I looks like a Vestax body but I couldn't find anything with that type of headstock, i.e. the extra binding, the correct truss rod cover, the correct "New Yorker" in the headstock inlay. There's a Comins D'A on eBay but the headstock inlay is way different, and I think the pick guard is ebony. The Heritage D'A has the better headstock but the fancier tailpiece and a different pick guard. Too bad I'm not an expert on these guitars. Anybody with a better evaluation?

I just wrote to Roger (Archtopdream) and he said:
