I will never own another NYer. My tribute guitar to my friend Jimmy D. Holst went to a D'Aquisto tribute shortly after his death. All the top archtop makers were there with their guitars. Holst said their were 2 DAQ guitars there. He said they completely blew away every single archtop in the house including Monteleone's.

What a legacy John D and Jimmy D left behind. The benchmark that cannot be topped. A talent that can only be a gift from above, and what a gift it was.

there was something magical that John passed onto Jimmy and we'll probably never know exactly what, there's tons of guys out there now that can do more precise work than them [though in John D's defense he was cranking them out fast] but John figured something out tonally and Jimmy took it a step further. there's great builders today but no one has topped them in sound yet.

btw, I was channel surfing the other day and briefly saw a guy playing a beautiful 50s blonde NYer cutaway w/Dearmond pu so I paused to watch, it was the very end of the show...Three's Company!
wish I knew the episode, I'd even watch that show just to see that guitar

Best laminate I have owned sound wise though my favorite laminate will always be the TF.
Holst’s plates are very light like 50’s Gibson’s.

If you can step out of the Gibson box their are some incredible archtop makers out there that will deliver a absolutely stellar archtop.
Cushman, Holst, and Campellone have all built me unbelievably good guitars far below the price of a new Gibson with better quality.
This statement is coming from a Gibson Boy.

When Stephen was supplying laminate plates for others (I notice those don't appear for sale on his website anymore), he went into detail about how the plates should be pressed, using a hard drying glue, and other factors contributing to that D'Aquisto/Borys laminate sound. Well Steve is really very picky about his finishes, It took a while to nail it but he got it. Then he made the bridge and fitted it to the top curve, then did the tailpiece and bracket. Next is the pickguard and then buffing and installing of tuners, pickguard, tailpiece, bridge and Bartolinni 5J. Final assembly and testing. Based on Vinnys final results I’m decidedly pumped.

Big Mike, that maple is stunning. I had to drop an old bigleaf maple several years back that had been growing next to my shop and had become overtopped by the cedars and firs. Huge. Hired a crew to take it apart, but left the main 12' log standing. Steve Andersen helped me decide on how to merchandise the pieces for future guitar parts, chunks properly cured for neck, sides, and backs. I love that wood man! Your guitar is going to be something special!

Steve is really a joy to work with. This is the one I had him build me a few years back. I miss the feeling of having a custom guitar built hehe Im jealous. Congrats!

More shots, the cleaning lady was here Saturday and I busted ass cleaning out the guest room of all the boxes that pile up, a lotbof work
it’s raining today so I took these indoor shots, tuned her up and played her a bit. I asked for a thinner neck, this is just a bit skinnier than a GB12 neck, fast and real easy to bar chord all the way up. Steve’s fit and finish is scary good, I’ll get outfoor shots of the sides do you can see just how good it is - the panels that are the didesssre bound in the same wood , it’s gorgeous. It’s really light has a lovely recstve and I’m stunned
