Why do they last so much longer than rounds?

I always thought it was the other way round.
To my ears flatwound start at the borderline between nice strings and dead strings. After one week they have already move to the "Dead side"

It's the fact that there is no groves to build up crud and such.

Also I think that flats are less bright right out of the gate so your ear is not expecting a bright sound like rounds...

Seriously, like was suggested above, I think a good part of it is the guitarist's expectation and preference. If you like flats, you probably like a slightly dead sound, and if you like round wounds, you probably lean slightly toward bright and twangy. The first thing to go away is bright and twangy.

Even if it was fascinating as all get out, I think it was not a good post. If it clogs up the thread and discourages alternate opinion, then I think it is out of place on an open forum.
Just an opinion,... clogging up the thread.

I just change the plain strings regularly so I can't say but my wound strings last a lot (rounds).

Drew, I definitely get the joke here - but also this is supposed to be a forum. So kicking the subject around is a higher ideal than an allegedly definitive opinion that kills to topic?
Anyhooooo,...

cos' there already DOA-so you can get rid of the body whenever you feel like it
LOL..but i think theres some truth to this
new ones do have more bounce-but when i replace mine, the difference is not anywhere near as dramatic as when i do round wounds, especially bronze or bronze mix
i replaced my mando tomastics after a full year-some but not a lot of change-do the same after a month with bronze and theres a huge change-same with steel or nickel rounds on my electric guitars
