Why do they last so much longer than rounds?

I always thought it was the other way round.
To my ears flatwound start at the borderline between nice strings and dead strings. After one week they have already move to the "Dead side"

It's the fact that there is no groves to build up crud and such.

Yep, always thought that was it too.

I have been told by a friend at major company that it has to do with the flat wound strings retain and trap less skin oil, which is acid I guess and helps to degrade the string faster, less dead skin and other things that get into the grooves on round wound strings and accumulate over time adding to the dead sound of strings.
Also I think that flats are less bright right out of the gate so your ear is not expecting a bright sound like rounds...

I deleted my long-winded opinion. I think the summary you gents have is an easier route.

Flat wound strings last longer because people don't replace them as often.

Seriously, like was suggested above, I think a good part of it is the guitarist's expectation and preference. If you like flats, you probably like a slightly dead sound, and if you like round wounds, you probably lean slightly toward bright and twangy. The first thing to go away is bright and twangy.

Even if it was fascinating as all get out, I think it was not a good post. If it clogs up the thread and discourages alternate opinion, then I think it is out of place on an open forum.

Just an opinion,... clogging up the thread.

I just change the plain strings regularly so I can't say but my wound strings last a lot (rounds).

I think about 1/3 of all my posts get deleted before I even submit them..
I try to keep everything below 3 short paragraphs now unless it is really flipping relevant.

That said.. nothing wrong with long winded posts.. I just dont have the attention span to read it all..

So how about your readers digest version?

    Gents,

Thanks, but can we drop this? I'd rather read what various people think about strings.

So I guess we are officially de-railed?

I just wanted to say earlier that I canned the long opinion in favor of the far shorter ones that did the job.

[Booka, S.] >>> Chris.. how am I supposed to know what to think if you dont tell me?

Drew, I definitely get the joke here - but also this is supposed to be a forum. So kicking the subject around is a higher ideal than an allegedly definitive opinion that kills to topic?

    Anyhooooo,...

This is a riot. I think you started a sub-thread within a thread.

In the case of the TI flats I use I think it's the nickel windings, whatever it is they last for a very long time.

cos' there already DOA-so you can get rid of the body whenever you feel like it

LOL..but i think theres some truth to this
new ones do have more bounce-but when i replace mine, the difference is not anywhere near as dramatic as when i do round wounds, especially bronze or bronze mix

i replaced my mando tomastics after a full year-some but not a lot of change-do the same after a month with bronze and theres a huge change-same with steel or nickel rounds on my electric guitars
