Hmmm ok just trying to acoid a rush decision. Have you checked the Para Driver DI? Some people love to use them with "jazz amps" (like AI) to get a warm tube feel.

Thanks Jorge - I'll check it out, tho' I'm quite happy with my Seymour Duncan Twin Pre amp. Thanks for sticking thro' all this. I started with the Clarus; moved onto tube amps; discovered I loved the sound of 6V6s; then I realised that the tube amp won't suit my live sound - I want a "dialled in" piano type sound, a bit Adam Rogers like, which I realise in my case is a tube pre to SS amp, and not the other way round. I haven't given up the Evans idea, I still have a few email replies to expect.

I had a couple of email replies. I ruffled the feathers of the Evans guy, asking about the differences between the current model and the tube preamp version: he's only interested in the new one - end of story. As far as the "Cheeky D 12" goes (I think if I bought one I might take that badge off), the 12" model is delayed at present, tho' they have a 10" one in their showroom in Central London - contact Westside, if you're interested.
I think I'll start recording using my current gear, keep my eyes and ears open and try stuff when it becomes available. Then I can hire, buy or borrow for reamping and launching the CD. Thanks for everybody's input in helping me to decide what to get, even if some of these amps are like hen's teeth!

I just tried an extreme setting on my Evans that sounds great, and I thought I'd share it here.
Bass 2
Body 10
Treble 10
Depth ON
Expand ON
I couldn't believe how acoustic the setting sounded with all my archtops. It wasn't at all ice picky like I had assumed it would be.

Just an update on those AER Cheeky D 12 combos. They tell me there'll be at least a two month delay before they're available in the UK.

$2,300 for a solid state combo!

Just as well they're not available, then!

This will be my last post on this thread - you'll be glad to hear! Thanks again to everyone, especially Chris and Jorge for responding. I was pretty close to shelling out for a NOS AH200 with tube preamp, but this turned out not to exist! I think I saw some listed on a pedal steel site - whether they were second hand, I dunno, but they were more than the current new model. Evans are a small company - I didn't realise how small until the dealer told me he could get them to "make one for me". It's all very friendly and everybody knows the maker personally. It sounds like a great amp, but I've been dithering about it - here's my theory.
Most of my pieces of pro gear seem to cost around about $1000 - £600+.
My Dynaudio monitors, Royer 121, Fireface, DG100 amp, Samplitude etc. That's actually 2 quanta each. 1 quantum is $500 - a UAD card, Lexicon plugin, Sibelius etc. The Evans is 3 quanta! For me, $500 is a lot, but less painful than the $1000 which is for stuff you must have. I broke the rule for my Godin LGX-SA (4 quanta!). So, I'd've paid the list price for a new Evans head, but with all the tax, shipping and duty, I feel it's a bit too dear for what it is, without trying it personally.
In the end, I feel the luxury of being a buyer. I think I'll wait to explore some second hand amps, and shop gear as it becomes available. On the SS front I read some good things sbout the Peavey XXL, for example - but I wouldn't buy that without trying it either. Maybe I'll rethink this in a bit, maybe after hearing an Evans, and shell out for a new one. I always regret not buying a blonde Gibson Byrdland many years ago, though that was a lot of quanta!
Cheers

[QUOTE=Franz 1997;204997]Chris as a side note - wouldn't a competent tech with the proper schematic be able to repair any problem with the Evans?
I bought an Evans JE-200. Loved it. I play professionally, and I used it for 8 to 10 years. It failed to turn on once and I sent it to the one person recommended by the company to fix it. He fixed the amp, with great difficulty after puzzling over the design - apparantly this was an unusual one and it was difficult to get a proper schematic. The amp failed again, and I decided I could not trust it. So I have a very expensive door stop.
Anyone else have an unrepairable Evans?
The company was not sympathetic. They said I should be happy to have gotten that much use out of an amp like this. All I can say is that I still gig with my Roland Jazz Chorus 60 that I bought new in 1978. Works great and never needed repair.
I loved the Evans sound, but the thing must work!
Very dissapointed. Now looking for a replacement I can trust.

Also my experience. I was not able to get Evans to part with a schematic for my amp. My amp lasted almost 20 years though. I had the feeling they thought I should buy a new amp from them instead - which I didn't do.

Having said that, I now use mambo amps - so my Evans is a doorstop too
Gotta say to Archtopist though, to get 10 years out of an amp is not bad.
