Your favorite humbucker pickup?

i'm a big fan of the Dimarzio Virtual PAF. the current 36th model wasn't available at the time, but it's a really nice pup. wax potted, works well with the tone knob, and takes distortion well (if that's your thing).

what do you like and what's it in?

I like the low wind Lollar Imperial. And, I also like the DiMarzio 36th Anniversaries.

i've never played the Lollar. how does it compare to the Dimarzio?

I think the Lollars are warmer and a bit darker sounding the DiMarzios are more articulate and balanced. The Lollars aren't as hot, either. Not sure if that is due to their height or the wind though.

Embossed (early 70s) gibson.. just the right amount of high end for my Tele. Others I have tried were too muddy which might be fine for a les paul but this guitar loved the PatNo.

ANother vote for the Gibson '57 Classic PAF. I also really like the Benedetto A6 and PAF.

I'm a dyed in the wool floating DeArmond fan but if I had to choose a humbucker, it would be a floating Johnny Smith.

Duncan Seth Lover in two of my Golden Eagles . . . love it!
(one pup, mounted, neck position)

Dimarzio PAF in a Super Eagle . . . love it (almost as much)
(one pup, mounted, neck position)

Schaller Golden 50 in my very first Golden Eagle. Warmest PAF style pup I've ever heard. (one pup, mounted, neck position)

My Gibson arch tops have stock humbeucker pups. No raves . . . no complaints.

aside from the potting, what would you say are the differences between the Duncan and the Dimarzio? also, is that the old PAF or the redesigned one?

My Super Eagle is a 1994. The pup is the original installed at the factory, so it's not the newer 36th anniversary model

I really like them both, but the Seth Lover seems to capture more of the airy openess that I like in an arch top. Not sure if it's because it's not potted. I don't play at high volumes, so microphonics or overtones are not a concern, disire or and issue. The Seth seems to be a lower wind with the Alnico magnets, as opposed to a bit hotter Duncan.

Solid bodies are another story. While I like the Seths in one of my H150s, I prefer the stock Gibson pups in my 2002 & 2007 R9s (Burst Buckers?) And I also have a different H150 with Duncan '59s that I prefer over the Seths in an LP style git. Never tried the Dimarzio 36th anniversaries yet.

both the Seths and the Burstbuckers are unpotted. the 2002 BBs (2 & 3) should be hotter than the Seth. the 2007 BBs (1 & 2) would be about the same as the Seth. i wonder what the differences would be if you swapped them.

I've got a Seth lover in the neck and a Lollar Lo Wind in the bridge of this G&L Bluesboy, great sounding pickups, no mudd. The Lollar has alot of Twang. I've also had a Klein Lo-Wind in a Jazzmaster Blacktop that I loved the sound of, sold that guitar to my cousin. I really dig the 57's in my 175, too.

Don't have any pictures of The 175 yet.

Suhr SSV and SSV+ combo - the only HBs I've tried that are articulate and respond to the tone control over its whole sweep. I tried a set of Lace Drop & Gains, and they were at least as good, but the output was simply monstrous for the guitar I tried them in (Parker Nightfly M, with very limited height adjustment).

I heard the Seymour Duncan Phat Staple recently in a friend's git. Sweet and chimey. That's what I am going to get after my piggy bank bulks up a little. (The Phat Staple comes in a humbucker case. Hope that qualifies.)

The G&L Bluesboy Classic has a nice articulate jazz tone in the stock Seth Lover neck pickup. I have A Princeton Reverb that matches up well for that kind of tone. Lately I've been keeping it tuned to Open D and playing it through a 5F1 Champ clone though.
