I did a wiring swap. I used a Emerson Custom ES-335 wiring harness with bumble Bee caps.(relocated the switch) did not reuse the treble bleed. The bridge pickup is a Candybucker Handwound Seymour Duncan ' 57 replica and a Kent Armstrong Handwound PAF 5 12 pole. sounds perfect! I think this is what Gibson wanted this guitar to be.

I currently have the Gibson HR Artist and had the Epiphone predecessor. These full sized hollowbodies are wonderful to play. They are loud enough without amplification for practice. But feedback is an issue, of course. I put a sound post in my Epiphone when I was gigging, which helped some. It still required attention to the stage setup to prevent the howling.
The Fusion series made very good sense for the change in style commercial music was entering. It does everything well. I don't think it captures the nuances of the original HR, especially with heavy strings, but most won't notice the difference in an audience. They will notice feedback if it occurs.
To me, the aesthetics of the early HRs wins over the Fusion style. The latter wins for versatility and practicality for a working musician. But for that matter, the ES-335 may be the ultimate for nightclub and bar work.

I saw this trio at Seattle’s Jazz Alley. I’m happy that I got to see Joey before he passed. What a true loss he was!
