Smelly Case

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am going to leave it in the sun for as long as necessary. It’s not something anyone would buy (the case) it really smells like nasty cologne or air freshener. My best bet is to buy another case if leaving it out doesn’t cure it. BTW it’s an 18” Campy. Big Red! Wonderful guitar but the case not so much!

Half of the patrons at my gigs last month smelled like that, and they all went home with somebody

I play a cigar bar pig roast every spring and every fall. A bass player with whom I’ve worked off & on for many years is a member, and they hold it outside on their lawn under a big tent……except when it rains very heavily. Three years ago, we had to play indoors. It was raining so hard that I didn’t dare carry anything in from the car without a bag over it.

Knowing that the sky was threatening, I brought the FrankenPaul in an old gig bag with broken zippers and loose threads. As I pulled up, the heavens let go with a monsoon. So I ran the gig bag in only long enough to get the guitar out of it, immediately taking the bag back out to my trunk. Three hours later, I did it in reverse. The bag could not have been inside more that 3 minutes total.

When I walked through our door, my wife’s first greeting was “Go put that stuff in the garage, then take off all your clothes and put them in this bag”. Sadly, my excitement was short-lived. The gig bag smelled like cigar smoke for over 3 weeks. I sprayed it every 12 hours inside and out with the industrial strength Febreze-like stuff that our building uses. I left it open on a bench in our outdoor parking area 24/7, and I carried it (open) every day when we took our 3 mile walk through the neighborhood.

I could bring it back inside after almost a month. Fortunately, the inch thick poly finish on the Epi LP was impervious - it was fine after a clean and polish. I probably could have carried it through the rain without damage. But the bag was touch ‘n go, and it was only lined with a smooth nylon fabric. I feel your pain!

Nilodor is a good nuclear option. I found in a dingy rental I lived in that it covered up the smell of possum urine and poo better than anything.

Many thanks for this! “Possum poo” is a descriptor that I will now be using daily. It’s a truly elegant replacement for so many crude exclamations…..

Sadly, its abbreviation will never replace BS. But I’m OK with that. I’ll just be careful to respond to blatant foolishness with “That's a pile of possum poop” rather than the much simpler and more reflexive “PP!”

I’m coming to the conclusion that the smell in the case is permanent. Anybody have a reasonably priced case for sale?

that would explain the smelly case! My cats love to sleep in guitar cases I’m always chasing them out.

I don't mind cats (they never wear cheap cologne) but for some reason, bats like to sleep in mine, especially in the daytime, haven't figured out why.
