First amp I ever played through was either a Pignose or a pawn shop-sourced Gibson GA-5. 1978 or 79. Both were... throaty.

[QUOTE=Tom Karol;1474641]OK, a few things:
1) Red tape definitely helps you play faster, but blueish-green makes you more soulful
and yellow is good for power pop.
"..my yellow in this case is not so mellow.."
So..your 12yo or so..and your introduced to the crowd and you play some cool blues lines..and Santana smiles.
Given that he must have practiced and had been playing for a couple of years to get to that level. He has grown alot since I first saw him on YT years ago.
I hope to see him grow even more. Teles.Strats..LP's..335s..L5's and the un-invented..

My friend who had one used it for blues harp, it had just the right breakup he was looking for at a reasonable volume for jamming with others. Battery powered (D cells if I recall rightly) so portable, plus the size of a shoebox. Had to be miked for a gig. With a guitar there was really no clean tone; it was throaty.

They were good at being a Pignose. If you owned a recording studio, and/or were a tone aficianado, and you already owned a dozen classic guitar amps in your collection, and you were wondering "gosh, what should I buy as my 13th amplifier?" a Pignose would be an excellent choice.
Most of Frank Zappa's guitar solos on Overnite Sensation and Apostrophe' were recorded through a Pignose. That's a bona fide on the way towards "legendary".

ok, Zappa i know. well, that would be an exaggeration. but "joe's garage" is one of my fav albums (i also like "shut up and play yer guitar") - i discovered him thanks to the algorithm giving me watermelon in easter hay and which has one of teh most beautiful guitar sounds i've ever heard
i might try this little thing then, it's cheap and seems cheerful enough. just wish it had a better name lol...

Which one of these pickups do you suppose he's got? -- Gibson and Epiphone Guitar Pickup Specs
Would you prefer hog snout?

hahaha, good one.
tho hog does sound better.
form me, as an advertising major brand names matter A LOT. i just can't get invested into something with a stupid name - why would i want to buy a product where the owner is taking a piss with the naming?! when I was looking for a looper, I found this company that makes an amazing one, however it has a very unfortunate name again, Pigtronix. Maybe I'm taking myself too seriously, but I don't wanna be seen around with something that says "Pigsomething" kek...Last edited by jazzloverfat; 07-09-2026 at 09:43 PM.

I wish Julian and Tom Waits would do a colab. They seem very similar in many ways. A sort of Americana music that has a certain darkness and soul to it.
I could easily hear Tom's voice accompanying a lot of what Julian played.Last edited by Archie; 07-16-2026 at 10:24 AM.
