You can't be getting acoustic strings for a beautiful guitar such as this which has two humbucking pickups!! At least go down the Monel route.

You’re right. Is being stupid. I have dadarrio XL 1036 but will probably order spécial archtop 12s. Will try the monel but had a bad experience with them on a Martin d28 Authentic I had once. Never like the feel of them. Tomorrow I’ll take the strings down and unscrew the YP. I hope it’s clean down there…

From just my own POV, if I liked the guitar I wouldn't give a s*** about having an L5 tail on it, and cosmetically I think it looks just fine. Maybe even better, not so "over the top." But it *would* be interesting to know how that actually happened.

18", super resonant, semi-thin; altogether hollow. A slimmed Super 400 the way Chet wanted it near the end of his life. It's its own thing. -Phil

It’s amazing how versatile the 400 could be in the right hands. Any guitar that finds favor with Kenny Burrell, Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, Eldon Shamblin, and Robben Ford is doing a lot of things right.

Another happy Super 400 player, Larry Coryell. IIRC, forum member Stringswinger had played with him. I saw him and his sons at a Pat Martino concert at the Jazz Bakery in Culver City. RIP.

Indeed ! thanks a million for your help. I've investigated some more and here is what I discovered :

It sold in 2011 at an auction sale in Texas for 9.859 USD (8 bids) in the EXACT same condition : description reads "All original finish with very minor nicks and scratches. Custom ordered no-pickguard model. No fret wear. Guitar shows as new. "1899" metal letters engraved on tailpiece, with diamond inlays. Original hardshell case included. Condition: Excellent"

I bought it yesterday in Paris and it looks vintage with some substantial amount of checking (I love it) What it doesn't say is if the truss rod cover, tuning machines and tailpiece where factory ordered... I'll ask Gibson about it. Maybe they'll respond:-)

It looks new in the pics from the auction... makes me kinda sad and think of time and ageing
