News regarding the ashtray: I had ordered a glass slide to use with the T486 thinline, but the strings were too thin - 9s - so I tried the Tele with its 10s, and it sounded great. I’ve played slide since I was 13, 53 years ago, but in the last house move two years ago, I seem to have lost the half-dozen slides I had, in different varieties. Anyway, it was great to go through my old moves, but noticed the ashtray stopped me from getting the right-hand control I needed for damping the open strings when needed. So off came the ashtray. Luckily that took about one second, so I can easily reapply it in other circumstances.

You gave me an idea. I tried using my orphaned ashtray as a slide. Bad idea. But thanks anyways.

I use my Tele for slide in standard tuning. It sounds great!

Here’s my “CooderCaster” that I keep tuned to open G. I installed the gold foil neck p/u and lap steel bridge p/u. It has sustain for days and has a really nice tone for slide playing.

Okay, that’s serious stuff, Mark! Love them. I bet they sound amazing!

Ed Bickert reportedly always used his Tele ashtray cover... as an actual ashtray. Snapped it back on the guitar at the end of the night so it was ready for the next gig. He even put a nametag on it.
I imagine that his Tele had a certain aroma to it after years of smoking while playing it.

That explains the Bickert Tone…

I keep intending to get a few ashtray bridge covers for my various Telecasters. It's on my list for tomorrow, now. But the only thing is, it's too small for a two or three hours cigar.

I’d trade ‘em all for your chops, Rob.

As I rapidly approach my 69th birthday, I must say that chops have not been a priority for quite some time. Still being able to play at a reasonably competent level is reward enough. Strike that, still being able to play at all is reward enough.

It's nice to have the option to do various techniques. I'm not throwing the ashtray in the case yet, but do take it on and off for different pieces.

I actually bought one as a hand rest. I use it most of the time and rarely take it off.
