Its kind of funny but also slightly annoying.
Ive recently taken a liking to Dunlop Ultex Jazz III picks in the 1.38 mil size. What is Dunlop thinking using a trasnlucent honey color? I mean its attractive enough but I kid you not.... the other evening I had a open bag on my counter and I knocked it off. The picks scattered and vanished on my hardwood floor. I actually had to go get a flashlight to shine at an angle on the floor so they would make shadows.
Maybe im the only one but I really like the red Jazz III nylons. Ive not lost one in months. Maybe its a sales tactic
Of course I will still use them. For me they are somewhere between a nylon pick and a Fender hard pick. Warmer and versatile but a little more definition than nylon on the lowest notes

Yeah, it's not like they glow in the dark or anything. I don't think visibility was the most important factor in the design. It can be hard to keep track of them. They're okay, but I tend to use my Blue Chip picks a lot more. The brown can be hard to see in some conditions, but I've never lost a Blue Chip pick for longer than a couple of minutes.

I put a dab of nail polish on them for just the reasons you described above. It is not the best method I´m sure but it helps some depending on the color of the floor.
-
Thats a good idea. I will hit the wife's stash!
I was thinking of coloring them but nothing came to mind that would stick. I didnt think of just a dot of nail polish.
I guess I have just the right color floor. I dropped 5 picks on the floor and they were all in a 1 sq meter area. I looked straight down on them and could not see one.
-
Its not fool proof but a step in that direction with the right nuance. I am the largest user of nail polish in the family!
-
I've tried using neon marker, but it doesn't do much other than rub off on my fingers pretty quickly.
-
I have a multicolored silk area rug in the living room (it's my wife's), it has enough colors in it that virtually every guitar pick disappears if I drop it, except for ones that are white.
-
I have that problem with my air guitar when I drop it.

I haven't tried the ultex, just the tortex, which I do not like.

Mine keep slipping out of my hand going to hybrid playing and then end up inside the guitar. You just keep shaking an eventually they come out but it can take a while.

Ultex is an excellent pick material, far better IMO than Tortex. These are my favorite Ultex picks. Access to this page has been denied

I recently switched to these. Love 'em

But then, I don't have honey hardwood flooring. Cheap white marble slabbed floor makes picks/plectra easy to find as long as I don't knock white or pearl coloured ones off the counter. Ultex is a non-problem.
You got issues with them honey Ultex. I got issues with them pearly whites.

Carpet in our music room is always hiding Ultex and prime tones. Marketing decision I reckon. Makes you need to buy more replacements.
-
I hadn't thought of the nail varnish trick - UV reactive nail polish and a black light seems the way to go.
On the plus side, If you lose enough of them there's always at least one nearby....
-
Used Ultex for a very long time. Switched to Fender Chugg and haven’t looked back. Unfortunately I’m forever looking for my Fender Chugg on my black rug with multicolored flowers. Has anybody seen my pick?
-
Nice to know I'm not the only one with the problem. The Ultex are my current favorite, but that transparent color has got to be the worst for visibility. They absolutely disappear on our reddish-brown pergo.
Primetones are made of Ultex and are easier to see, but at a premium price. I bought a 3-pack of the Jazz III size, and they're very similar to the standard Ultex, but I didn't think the beveled edges were worth it. (Plus, I like the grip of the regular ones better.) Maybe if I looked at the price as the cost of not losing them.
That Sweetwater link for the Petrucci pick is interesting...it says "slightly larger size" so I wonder how it compares to the Jazz III and the XL versions. May have to try these.
-
When it happens to me, I just imagine they are jamming with all the notes I’ve also dropped.
-
The Petrucci pick is slightly larger than a jazz III pick, but not by a lot.
I don't know why there are two images of different sizes, only one shows in the edit dialog.
-
At one time, I used Dunlop Stubbies which used to be clear.
Generally when I dropped one, it was lost to me forever!

Can you pay for invisible picks with invisible money?
-
For a couple thousand dollars you can get your floors stained a darker finish. So, there's that.
