I owned a AS153 and AM153 at different points in the past. Somewhat regretfully sold them, but am considering getting another Ibanez semi.
Some models I'm considering (I'll be looking used, so possibly an 80's or 90's model for some of these):
AS153
AM153
JSM100
AS200
AS2000h
JSM10
EKM10
AS50 (from the 1980's)
I did tend to like having the tri-sound switch on the ones I had (which the JSM100 does not have). I also loved the necks on the AS/AM153. The China/Indonesia-made models have a bulky neck joint that I didn't love. I worry that the neck on AS200, AS2000h, & AS50 might be too thin for my liking.
Any thoughts on these? How noticeable of a difference is there with the Japan models compared to the China & Indonesian models?

I have an AS50 from 1980, and in my opinion it's the time to get one before they get too expensive on the used market.
I haven't looked recently their prices today (should've looked before posting), but it's one of the best guitars I've ever had, all categories, all prices, all brands, all styles. No kidding, and I think I've had over a 100 guitars by now..
The neck is medium sized and supremely carved, like Ibanez know how to do it. But it's not thin at all.
I like it better than an 1981 AS200 I used to have because it's lighter (a lot), a little smaller (not much, it's not an AMXXX), and it's just as good. A little "airier" because the top is thinner. Resonnates almost like an ES330.
To me this is the one to get !

I've been playing my '89 AS100 since '89. It has the smaller headstock which I guess is not popular although personally not a big issue for me. I've played it all these years so I guess I'd say I like it. It's a great general business guitar - rock, blues, jazz it gets it all done. The 79-82 models will cost you some coin, but because the 89-90 (same factory) are less popular if you locate one they can be had for a reasonable price. Great do it all guitar.

The AS50 works for Ben Monder and has for 30+ years. Hard to think of a stronger endorsement.
I have a friend who owns an AS180 that is a very, very nice guitar for jazz and probably other styles. Not sure what differentiates it from the AS200, but a great guitar.

Some AS models from the late 80's to early 90's switched to Korea.
They're good, but not as good as the MIJ ones.

True. The "Artstar" AS100 was only MIJ (1987-1990), then discontinued but some of the others were done in Korea.
