Dogal, Pyramid or TI are the only choices.

I couldn't see if they were round core or hex.

GHS Nickel Rockers (rollerwound) are somewhere between flat and round wound and have a round core. The sound is closer to rounds, but without the finger squeak.

I use Dogals and their main retailer Strings by Mail tell me the Evolutions which I love are the same as the Expressions except the sets are slightly differently configured. Seems odd.

After many years of using TI Swings I changed to Pyramid Golds about 5 years ago. I like both but the Pyramids seem more consistent to me. Most of my sets are 12-52. I haven’t tried Dogals except for a set of acoustic flats that I have on a Martin. The Expressives are about twice as expensive as Pyramids so I won’t try them. Stringjoy is supposed to be coming out with flats soon. Not sure if they will be round core, but my hunch is that they will be. I do have a couple of sets of the round wound round core Stringjoy Broadways on a couple of my guitars and really like them. One thing for sure: I don’t like Chromes. But I believe they are hex core. In any event I have about half a dozen sets of Chromes that I have accumulated that I need to get rid of.

Stringjoy’s been saying that for a few years. I was excited to try them when they first talked about it. But I stopped holding my breath some time ago.

If there’s any news on that front, I’d love to know.

Maybe so. They did email me and say this fall, but they could be yanking me chain. I have some more Pyramids on the way anyway. Going to rewire one of my guitars and will need a new set of strings for it.

After further exploration I concur! I really like the evolutions on my Collings I35. They are brighter and give a round wound sheen on a guitar usually played with rounds. I use 10s with a nyxl carbon steel 11 on it. I tried Expressives12-52 on my Campellone but the heavier lower strings didn’t feel right for me. I found my mate with Expressive 11-50s! There is something about the elasticity of these strings. It goes beyond how the tension feels when first intonated. The smoothnesss of the stretch of the string under the finger is wonderful and extremely responsive. And they sound great, warm, darker, perfect for the Campy tone. Don’t know why Matt from Strings by Mail thinks the evolutions and expressives are the same, they’re not.
